  WEBCAST APR 18 – Book Talk: The Secret Life of Data 

  On Thursday April 18 2024 at 1pm-2pm EDT (17:00-18:00 UTC) the Authors Alliance and the Internet Archive host an online book talk ‘The Secret Life of Data‘.

  In The Secret Life of Data: Navigating Hype and Uncertainty in the Age of Algorithmic Surveillance, authors Aram Sinnreich and Jesse Gilbert explore the many unpredictable, and often surprising, ways in which data surveillance, AI, and the constant presence of algorithms impact our culture and society in the age of global networks. Their basic premise: no matter what form data takes, and what purpose we think it’s being used for, data will always have a secret life. How this data will be used, by other people in other times and places, has profound implications for every aspect of our lives—from our intimate relationships to our professional lives to our political systems.

In this presentation, Laura DeNardis, author of The Global War for Internet Governance (Yale University Press), reflects on the emerging and entrenched Internet technologies and postulates on the next frontier – the Interplanetary Internet. Dr. DeNardis flushes out the question, “what anticipated governance functions and heliopolitical frameworks will be necessary to design, administer, and secure an interplanetary communication future that benefits all humankind?”

  On Tuesday September 22 2020 at 12pm EDT (16:00 UTC) the American University School of Communication hosts a book launch ‘Researching Internet Governance: Methods, Frameworks, Futures‘. This multidisciplinary book (MIT Press) takes Internet governance research as a research subject in its own right, discussing methods and conceptual approaches. The authors discuss such topics as the emergence of “internet governance” as an area of academic study and a real-world policy arena; the scholarly perspectives of Science, technology and society (STS), the law, computer science, and political science; the use of big data and text mining in internet governance studies; and cybersecurity. American University’s Internet Governance Lab’s Faculty Directors Derrick Cogburn, Laura DeNardis, Nanette Levinson and Global Fellow Francesca Musianipecial will be joined by guest speakers including Sandra Braman, Ron Deibert, Jeanette Hofmann, Eric Jardine, Rikke Frank Jørgensen, Milton L Mueller, Niels ten Oever, Kieron O’Hara, & Rolf Weber.   The Internet in Everything Book Launch 

  Today Wednesday January 29 2019 at 4pm EST (21:00 UTC) the Internet Governance Lab hosts a launch event for Dr. Laura DeNardis’s new book ‘The Internet in Everything: Freedom and Security in a World With No Off Switch‘ (Yale University Press, 2019) in Washington DC. After an introduction from American University President Sylvia Matthews Burwell, Dr. DeNardis will be joined by Vint Cerf and Professor Anupam Chander for a discussion on the evolution and growth of the Internet of Things, and its attendant consequences.   Today, Tuesday May 10 2016 the Microsoft Innovation & Policy Center and the Greater Washington DC Chapter of the Internet Society (ISOC-DC) for a panel discussion Is The Internet Fragmenting? in Washington DC. Recent developments related to the Internet have prompted alarming questions about whether it is fragmenting. They include a diverse set of technical, economic, and policy developments and decisions that have been taken in response to the continued growth and globalization of the Internet, and its evolving role as critical infrastructure for the digital economy. Examples include a rise in DNS content filtering, deployment of distinct IPv4 and IPv6 networks, introduction of zero rating services, and an increasing number of laws related to data localization and restriction of cross-border data flow. Taken together, they raise an overarching concern over whether the global Internet is moving from a universal system to one characterized by various types of fragmentation that are caused either by intended or unintended consequences of technical, commercial, and/or political decision taken without full consideration of their potential impact. Policy stakeholders, including government, the technical community, civil society, industry, and other organizations to consider these issues more fully. Panelists will discuss the different types of Internet fragmentation, their associated technical, economic, and political impacts and when fragmentation may be desirable or problematic. Additionally, the panelists will examine how these should be taken into consideration in policy making. Keynote: Ambassador Daniel A. Sepulveda, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs, U.S. Department of State.   On Thursday May 14 and Friday May 15 2015 the  Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs(SIPA) and the Global Commission on Internet Governance (GCIG) presented the Conference on Internet Governance and Cyber-Security at Columbia University in NYC. Over 40 speakers – including Vint Cerf, Kathy Brown, Fadi Chehadé, Larry Strickling, David Gross, Leslie Daigle, Rebecca Mackinnon, Konstantinos Komaitis, Michael Nelson, and Laura DeNardis, discussed the most pressing policy issues in the worlds of internet governance and cyber-security including privacy, security, innovation, international trade and cross border data flows, data protectionism, human rights, freedom of expression and more. The conference was webcast live via a joint effort of the Internet Society and the SIPA IT Department. Video is below.

  NEW BOOK: The Global War for Internet #Governance by @LauraDeNardis 

  On January 14 2014 Yale University Press published The Global War for Internet Governance by American University Professor Laura DeNardis. From the blurb:

  The Internet has transformed the manner in which information is exchanged and business is conducted, arguably more than any other communication development in the past century. Despite its wide reach and powerful global influence, it is a medium uncontrolled by any one centralized system, organization, or governing body, a reality that has given rise to all manner of free-speech issues and cybersecurity concerns. The conflicts surrounding Internet governance are the new spaces where political and economic power is unfolding in the twenty-first century. This all-important study by Laura DeNardis reveals the inner power structure already in place within the architectures and institutions of Internet governance. It provides a theoretical framework for Internet governance that takes into account the privatization of global power as well as the role of sovereign nations and international treaties. In addition, DeNardis explores what is at stake in open global controversies and stresses the responsibility of the public to actively engage in these debates, because Internet governance will ultimately determine Internet freedom.
