On Friday – Sunday, 11–13 September 2026, from 14:00 CEST (12:00 UTC), the MetaRheinMainChaosDays (MRMCD) hold ‘MRMCD 2026 — Grenzen überwinden‘ (‘Overcoming Borders’) at the Robert-Piloty-Gebäude of TU Darmstadt in Darmstadt, Germany.

This year’s theme holds that borders are everywhere — some built of concrete and barbed wire, others of bureaucracy, protocols, or badly documented APIs. Some protect, others exclude, and some exist only because nobody has yet tried to overcome them. But not every border may be crossed: just as private data must be protected, personal boundaries must always be respected and defended. In computing, limits shift constantly as processing power grows, networks thicken and systems grow more complex, while new constraints appear in the form of artificial barriers raised by proprietary platforms, regulatory hurdles, overstretched infrastructure, and security models that block more than they protect. Socially too, states erect arbitrary barriers that information can overcome, while technologies connect people across continents and open new digital divides at the same time.

The event will be webcast by the Chaos Computer Club Video Operation Center (C3VOC). Sessions are held mostly in German, with some in English, and there is no live translation.

WEBCAST APR 23 – International Cooperation on Internet Freedom and Openness

ISOC LIVEOn Wednesday April 23, 2025, at 11:00-12:30 EDT (15:00-16:30 UTC), the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information, as part of its Global Digital Governance series, presents a webinar ‘International Cooperation on Internet Freedom and Openness‘.

In recent years there has been debate in U.S. foreign policy circles about ways to strengthen cooperation among democratic countries seeking to promote Internet freedom and openness. In this context, the Biden Administration considered spearheading a new alliance to work alongside other initiatives on democracy promotion and Internet freedom, and in April 2022 launched a Declaration for the Future of the Internet with sixty partner countries. But two years on, the policy environment has changed dramatically. Digital cooperation among the liberal democracies is now complicated by a host of new disagreements over trade, regulation, security, information and geopolitical alignments. At the same time, digital cooperation among nondemocratic governments is proceeding without such disruptions and is producing results. These trends raise a number of pressing questions about the future of global digital governance in general and the international coalitional dynamics around Internet freedom and openness in particular.

What has and has not been achieved in this issue-area, and what is the state of play today? How might the apparent weakening of the coalition of liberal democracies impact the international politics of Internet freedom and openness in the years ahead? How might key countries, regions and multinational companies adapt to the new environment? Can multistakeholder cooperation help to fill in any gaps and influence the trajectory of change?

This webinar will take stock of these and related questions. A panel of experts with hands-on experience in this field will lead off the conversation, and then the rest of the session will be devoted to open discussion among all interested attendees.

The session is simulcast live by ISOC LIVE.

WEBCAST JAN 18 – Regulating the Internet Ten Years after the SOPA/PIPA Blackout

livestream

livestreamOn Tuesday 18 January 2022 at 11:00-12:30 EST (16:30-17:30 UTC) the Institute for Technology Law & Policy at Georgetown Law hosts a webinar ‘Regulating the Internet Ten Years after the SOPA/PIPA Blackout‘. Calls to regulate the internet more strictly are now commonplace, but a new report from Freedom House observes both the promise and peril of internet regulation. The global drive to control big tech thus carries a seeming contradiction: it can be an expression of democracy but can also support authoritarianism. On the tenth anniversary of the blackout of Wikipedia, Google, Reddit, and Mozilla in response to proposed internet regulation in the U.S., we ask what we learned from the SOPA/PIPA debates, take stock of where internet regulation stands today, and ask what internet regulations carry the most promise or risk today.
