On Tuesday 23 June 2020 at 13:00 UTC the Internet Society hosts a webinar to mark the release of a new report ‘Anchoring the African Internet Ecosystem: Lessons from Kenya and Nigeria’s Internet Exchange Points Growth’. Between 2012 and 2020, a vibrant community in Kenya and Nigeria, dedicated to Internet peering, helped dramatically boost the levels of Internet traffic that is locally exchanged from 30% to 70%. This has led to significant cost savings for participating networks. It has also positioned these two countries as the primary regional peering hubs in East and West Africa. On Thursday June 18 2020 at 7pm EDT (23:00 UTC) the Accessibility VR Meetup hosts ‘Ideas for A11y Programs in XR Tech Companies‘ on Mozilla Hubs. Various community-driven efforts are actively working to define accessibility user requirements, practices, and guidance for XR technologies and experiences. Presenter Bill Curtis-Davidson will outline how XR technology companies can engage with these efforts and put in place accessibility programs to help make sure their products, content, and experiences are usable by the broadest number of users. This webinar, ‘Shared Spectrum Strategies to Increase Affordable Access in Rural Areas‘ assesses the growing impact of COVID-19 on livelihoods and work in Africa and examines the readiness of the continent’s Internet infrastructure to help mitigate those challenges. The event will explore innovations in regulations that have the potential to improve affordable access to Internet in rural areas through shared spectrum strategies. Issues discussed will include license exempt spectrum, dynamic spectrum management, as well as ‘use it or share it‘ provisions for International Mobile Telecommunications Spectrum.
