On December 11 2014 the Copyright Society of the USA’s New York Chapter presented a luncheon panel – Fair Compensation or a Pandora’s Box? Pre-1972 Sound Recordings & Streaming Radio – at the Princeton Club in NYC. A panel looked at the legal framework and issues involved in the recent lawsuits involving royalties for webcasting of pre-1972 sound recordings. After providing a background of the key issues, the panel discussed the potential practical impacts of affirmance or reversal of the recent Flo & Eddie decision, as well as whether the state-based issue of common law copyright for pre-1972 recordings is a matter that should be resolved at the federal level. In 2013 the Dynamic Coalition on Network Neutrality has issued a report The Value of Network Neutrality for the Internet of Tomorrow that explores some of the most crucial facets of Network Neutrality, underscoring its close relationship with the full enjoyment of end-users fundamental rights. The report also includes a proposal for a Model Framework on Network Neutrality that has been elaborated by the Dynamic Coalition through an open, inclusive and multi-stakeholder effort, in order to promote an efficient safeguard of the Net Neutrality principle in accordance with international human rights standards.
In 2014 the Dynamic Coalition followed up with its second report Network Neutrality: an Ongoing Regulatory Debate. The report, which includes a preface by Vint Cerf, offers a collection of independent analyses exploring existing and proposed regulatory approaches to net neutrality and scrutinising the economic justifications that support the network neutrality principle.

On Thursday December 11 2014 the Village Independent Democrats presented Tim Wu speaking on “Net Neutrality and You” at the St. John’s Lutheran Church Annex in Greenwich Village NYC. Tim Wu coined the expression “Net Neutrality” – the principle that Internet service providers should offer equal access to all content and applications and equal service to all users. While the Obama administration embraces this concept and considers the internet a public utility, there are powerful lobbies and a Republican-dominated Congress that could block or severely modify Net Neutrality. Today Wednesday December 10 2014 the Internet Society will present the Central Asian Internet Symposium, Bishkek 2014 in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic. The Central Asia region serves as a strategic link between Asia and Europe for terrestrial Internet connectivity. Many international and regional organizations are recognizing the economic and social impact of an improved regional connectivity infrastructure. ISOC has engaged with several high-level stakeholders in the Kyrgyz Republic, including National Institute for Strategic Studies of Kyrgyzstan (NISS), to collaborate on developing the Internet infrastructure in the region leading to this Symposium which has the theme “Perspectives for Internet Development in the Kyrgyz Republic“. Speakers include Frédéric Donck, Director of European Regional Bureau, Internet Society, and Olaf Kolkman, Chief Internet Technology Officer, Internet Society, and Talant Sultanov, Director of NISS. On October 27 2014 the Copyright Society of the USA’s New York Chapter presented a luncheon panel – Spiders and Scraping and Bots, Oh My! — Datanomics, Copyright, and Legal Liability – at the Princeton Club in NYC. A panel looked at the implications of the intersection of big data and data mining with copyright-related principles, including DMCA restrictions and fair use.
