Twenty years ago, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission issued Kevin Werbach’s working paper, Digital Tornado, one of the first examinations by a government agency of the transformative potential of the internet. Today we find ourselves in a world where little remains untouched by the wave of digital connectivity. Yet fundamental questions remain unresolved, and even more serious new questions have emerged. This major academic conference will examine these questions. Speakers include Tim Wu, Sally Wentworth, Yochai Benkler, Helen Nissenbaum, Bruce Schneier, Joel Reidenberg, Gigi Sohn, & Christopher Yoo. An edited volume of essays based on the presentations will be published by Cambridge University Press. A live webcast will be available via the Internet Society Livestream Channel.

Tim WuOn Thursday December 11 2014 the Village Independent Democrats presented Tim Wu speaking on “Net Neutrality and You” at the St. John’s Lutheran Church Annex in Greenwich Village NYC. Tim Wu coined the expression “Net Neutrality” – the principle that Internet service providers should offer equal access to all content and applications and equal service to all users. While the Obama administration embraces this concept and considers the internet a public utility, there are powerful lobbies and a Republican-dominated Congress that could block or severely modify Net Neutrality.
