On Monday January 31 2022 at 09:00-12:30 AST (13:00-16:30 UTC) the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) in partnership with the Government of Barbados hosts a webinar ‘Traversing the Metaverse – A Caribbean Perspective‘. In 2021 Barbados announced it would be among the first countries to open an embassy in the metaverse. It is estimated that by 2025 the global metaverse market will be worth 280 billion US dollars. This webinar will enable discussion that will assist in the formulation of policy, legal and regulatory issues in an effort to educate and raise awareness of the opportunities and challenges for, in particular, small island developing states (SIDS). This will allow the relevant stakeholders to advance regional initiatives and make the necessary policy interventions in the interest of ensuring the Caribbean is poised to provide global leadership in this emerging technological space.
On Tuesday February 8 2022 at 19:00 EST (00:00 UTC / 09:00 JST Jan 20) the Accessibility VR Meetup hosts ‘Accessible Multimodal Input in Augmented Reality Training Applications‘ online. Ashley Coffey will share recent PEAT research on making immersive hybrid workplaces more inclusive and accessible. She’ll reflect on themes explored in an “Inclusive XR in the Workplace” white paper co-authored with the XR Association. Tim Stutts will share his design experience with multi-modal inputs (hardware controls, gesture, voice) and sensory feedback (graphical, LEDs, sound, haptics) for augmented reality head-mounted displays, touching briefly on his previous work on Magic Leap’s Lumin OS, symbolic input and surrounding accessibility efforts, before diving into current Vuforia Work Instructions applications for HoloLens, RealWear, and most recently Magic Leap, with the debut of Capture and Vantage applications to the platform.

On Friday January 28 2022 from 11:30-12:30 CET (10:30-11:30 UTC) Encryption Europe celebrates Data Privacy Day with a public debate to reconcile seemingly opposite views: privacy and encryption as enablers of security. The panel will aim to remind the community that privacy is not a given and must be defended, and that those who defend privacy do so responsibly.

Pan-Pan Jiang of Google will introduce a new Android app called Project Relate, which aims to help people with speech impairments communicate more easily with others and interact with Google Assistant. Users record a set of phrases from which the app, via a library of more than one million samples, learns how to better understand the speaker’s unique speech patterns, and give them access to the app’s three main features: Listen, Repeat, and Assistant. Impaired English speakers in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States are invitedto trial the app.
