Today, as several initiatives, including the Government, Space Agencies, and the private sector, expand communication capabilities off the planet, to the Moon, Mars, and beyond, it is the time to discuss how a “Common Interplanetary Network Infrastructure” could be realized, which entails the need for Governance – a management structure to support the operation of the infrastructure itself.
The IPNSIG Architecture and Governance Working Group (AWG) has tackled these important subjects by reflecting on the lessons learned from the Internet’s evolution, and from insights provided by our past Academy speakers. This session will examine the progress and prospects in this field.
SPEAKERS Yosuke Kaneko – IPNSIG President Vint Cerf – IGF Leadership Panel Chair / IPNSIG Board Member Marc Blanchet – IPNSIG AWG Member

Internet governance often focuses on the institutional and policy implications of well known organizations such as ICANN and the IGF. While these organizations are significant, there is a much broader landscape of operational institutions that contribute to the day-to-day operations, security, and stability of the Internet’s infrastructure, what is referred to here as the operational institutional complex. In this talk, Jesse will present the important role of these operational institutions through the lens of data governance, highlighting the formal and informal information, data, and knowledge sharing relationships at play in day-to-day operations. To illustrate the importance of these organizations’ data governance relationships, Jesse Sowell will illustrate these concepts by highlighting two efforts to formalize data governance relationships: ISOC’s MANRS project and ICANN’s KINDNS project.
SPEAKER Dr. Jesse Sowell, Lecturer in Internet Governance and Policy, Department of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Public Policy (STEaPP), University College London (UCL)
On Wednesday May 10 2023 at 12:00 UTC the Internet Society presents a panel ‘#NoExamShutdown Webinar‘. Every year, with millions of students in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) sitting for national secondary and high school exams, governments regularly implement nationwide Internet shutdowns during examinations to foil students’ attempts at cheating or sharing exam questions. This has become, unfortunately, a real challenge in the region. Culprits of this draconian measure include Sudan, Algeria, Jordan, Iraq, and Syria. Join us to discuss the impact of government-ordered Internet shutdowns planned for upcoming exams in Algeria, Jordan, Iraq, Mauritania, and Syria and how you can demand authorities guarantee open access to the Internet at all times
PANEL Afef Abrougui, Lead Researcher, SMEX Fatima Zohra Feriel Menouar, National Coordinator of Salamat Algeria / Digital Safety Trainer, Digital Arabic Network Asia Abdulkareem, Project Coordinator, INSM
MODERATOR Hanna Kreitem, Senior Advisor, Internet Technology and Development, MENA, Internet Society

On Wednesday 11 May 2023 at 14:00-15:00 UTC, the Internet Society Online Safety Special Interest Group (OS-SIG) presents a webinar ‘How to protect your phone from cyber criminals?‘ All your life is more or less linked to your phone. But, as surprisingly as it may seem, only one smartphone out of two is protected by an antivirus. And not everyone will use a VPN to connect to a public wi-fi through his smartphone.
In this webinar, the Online Safety SIG will review the threats which are floating above smartphone’s users. We will also give some tips to protect your phone (online and offline).
