WEBCAST WEDS – Beyond Cambridge Analytica: Microtargeting and Online Campaigns in 2020 #microtargeting @isocdc @AmericanU @InternetGov @emmalbriant @davekarpf @aram

livestream

livestreamOn Wednesday September 2 2020, at 10:00 EDT (14:00 UTC), the Internet Society Washington DC Chapter, the Internet Governance Lab, and the American University School of Communication present ‘Beyond Cambridge Analytica: Microtargeting and Online Campaigns in 2020‘.

Use of data and microtargeting in political advertising were famously critiqued after in the 2016 US elections, and in relation to other recent influence campaigns around the world. Though the principal firm known for these campaigns, Cambridge Analytica, shuttered in 2018, these techniques are still widely employed, and several former CA employees are now involved with new data analytics and campaign firms including Data Propria, which has been linked to the 2020 election.

For this event, two of the foremost researchers into online political communications discuss evolving campaign strategy and methods, clarify lingering myths and misunderstandings and reflect on the significance, impact and lessons for campaign communications in the 2020 US presidential election and beyond.

WEBCAST TODAY: Governing the Internet of Things @isocdc @InternetGov @doctorow #iot #iotgov

livestreamToday, Friday March 30 2018, the Internet Society Washington DC Chapter (ISOC DC) and the Internet Governance Lab will host a mini-conference Governing the Internet of Things at the American University in Washington DC. The Internet’s architecture and governance structures have been designed to enable innovation, global communication and the free flow of information, but the Internet of Things presents a new range of governance challenges. An Internet embedded in the material world creates new and increased concerns around privacy, security, and the possibility of physical harm to people and disruption of material infrastructure. To what extent do the Internet’s underlying architectural and governance principles need to evolve to address these risks? What is the outlook for security and privacy in the context of ubiquitous cyber-physical systems that range from cars to medical devices to home control systems? What forms of inequality and discrimination are emerging in this environment? This panel brings together stakeholders from industry, design communities, civil society and academia to address the transformation of Internet governance in the age of cyber-physical systems.
