livestreamOn Tuesday 18 January 2022 at 11:00-12:30 EST (16:30-17:30 UTC) the Institute for Technology Law & Policy at Georgetown Law hosts a webinar ‘Regulating the Internet Ten Years after the SOPA/PIPA Blackout‘. Calls to regulate the internet more strictly are now commonplace, but a new report from Freedom House observes both the promise and peril of internet regulation. The global drive to control big tech thus carries a seeming contradiction: it can be an expression of democracy but can also support authoritarianism. On the tenth anniversary of the blackout of Wikipedia, Google, Reddit, and Mozilla in response to proposed internet regulation in the U.S., we ask what we learned from the SOPA/PIPA debates, take stock of where internet regulation stands today, and ask what internet regulations carry the most promise or risk today.

Today Thursday March 23 2017 att 9:30am EDT (13:30 GMT/UTC) Ranking Digital Rights will launch the 2017 Corporate Accountability Index: a ranking of 22 of the world’s most powerful telecommunications, internet, and mobile companies on their commitments and disclosed policies affecting users’ freedom of expression and privacy. The 2017 Index follows the inaugural 2015 Ranking Digital Rights Corporate Accountability Index which found widespread failure by companies to disclose key information about their policies and practices affecting freedom of expression and privacy. Users were left largely in the dark about how and why their information is collected, used, and shared, as well as many of the circumstances under which content is blocked or removed. Speaking at the launch will be  Kevin Bankston, Director, Open Technology Institute; Rebecca MacKinnon, Director, Ranking Digital Rights; Melissa Brown, Partner, Daobridge Capital; Arvind Ganesan, Director, Business and Human Rights, Human Rights Watch; Niels ten Oever, Head of Digital, Article 19. Rebecca Mackinnon is a senior research fellow at the New America Foundation, where her work focuses on holding technology companies accountable to universally recognized human rights standards on free expression and privacy. She is currently working with the University of Pennsylvania and Internews on a new project called Ranking Digital Rights. She recently wrote an article for Guernica Magazine Playing Favorites giving some details of the project’s theme – how the power of big online companies and governments to change local Internet experiences could threaten human rights worldwide. New America Foundation have now posted a video in which she talks about the article.
