On Thursday – Friday June 22-23 2017 the Barbados Internet Governance Forum 2017 will be held in Cave Hill, Barbados. Hosted jointly by the Internet Society Barbados Chapter, the Barbados Government and its Telecoms Unit, this inaugural national Internet Governance Forum (IGF) will provide Barbadians from all sectors of society with a platform to discuss how they use the Internet and the most pertinent issues affecting them. One of the key outputs from the IGF will be a comprehensive report detailing the critical Internet Governance (IG) issues affecting business, government, civic organizations and ordinary citizens across the island. We also hope to educate citizens about the various processes by which they can become involved to build their knowledge and make valuable contributions to Internet Governance. The event is being webcast live via the Internet Society Livestream Channel and the Internet Society Barbados Chapter Facebook Page.
Tonight Monday June 19 2017 the SF Bay Area Internet Society presents Blaming Technology. Noted IP lawyer Andrew Bridges will talk about the role of technology providers and online platforms in debates over public behavior. During the evening he’ll be touching upon: Fake news and online moderation; Algorithm transparency and algorithm responsibility; The Rule of Law: regulating behavior or technology? Technology and business model design as free expression; Design freedom versus design mandates; Intellectual property/”piracy” as a product liability/negligence concept; Policy battles facing technology and online platform providers. The event will be relayed live via the Internet Society Livestream Channel.
Today, Thursday 15 June 2017, as part of its 25th anniversary, the Internet Society will host a Community Forum for its members to address key questions around whether the Internet of the future will be a force that brings people together or divides us. This is a follow up to the May 11 “Brave New World” panel in London. Today there will be a 90-minute discussion moderated by Emily Taylor, Associate Fellow, Chatham House, Panel: Dr. Ismail Syed Shah, Chairman, Pakistan Telecommunications Authority; Rebecca MacKinnon, Director of the Ranking Digital Rights project at New America; Sally Wentworth, Vice President of Global Policy Development, Internet Society. Following remarks from the panel the conversation will be opened to the community. How do you think the Internet will impact society in the future? Members can join the discussion via Zoom.
