On Friday April 1 2022, at 1pm-2pm EDT (17:00-18:00 UTC) the Internet Society Washington DC Chapter, in partnership with the Center for Democracy and Technology and Stanford Internet Observatory hosts a discussion ‘Content Moderation in an End-to-End Encrypted World’. In recent years the focus of the encryption debate has shifted to social media platforms and messaging services’ content moderation policies and practices. While not always explicitly targeting end-to-end encryption (E2EE), proposals to regulate social media companies, including the proposed EARN IT Act bill in the U.S., MeitY’s Intermediary Guidelines in India, and the proposed Online Safety Bill in the U.K. could have serious implications for E2EE services. As this policy debate continues, companies have proposed methods to moderate content on E2EE platforms that raise privacy concerns, such as those that utilize machine learning and client-side scanning. This event will feature presentations on critical research in this area, highlight global efforts to defend encryption against movements to undermine it, and include an open discussion.

On Thursday 5 August 2021 from 10am-3:30pm BRT (13:00-18:30 UTC) the Recife Law and Technology Research Institute will convene the 2nd ‘Seminar on Cryptography, Politics and Fundamental Rights‘. The challenges that the full employment of cryptography face in Brazil and in the world are continuous. Among proposals for filtering communications content, weakening cryptography for access to communications by investigative authorities, and making it mandatory for providers to employ message traceability mechanisms, the risks that the security of connected infrastructures and users’ rights face are varied. In order to map these policies, the contexts from which they arise and the challenges they potentially offer, we will bring together panelists from different regions of the world – Asia, Europe and the Americas – as well as researchers and Brazilian police representatives. The event is part of the schedule of #CriptoAgosto2021 and has the support of the Internet Society, Internet Society – Brazil Chapter, and Coalizão Direitos na Rede. EN/PT interpretation will be provided.

On Thursday 10 June 2021. at 16:00 BST (15:00 UTC) the Internet Society UK England Chapter hosts a webinar and roundtable ‘Understanding the UK Online Safety Bill‘. On 12 May 2021 the UK Government published the draft Online Safety Bill, calling it a “manifesto commitment to make the UK the safest place in the world to be online while defending free expression.” The Bill contains several proposals including some suggesting that Encryption should be weakened through various methods. This has generated much pushback from UK entities and the Internet Society has drafted an online letter to members of the UK Parliament, co-signed by dozens of organisations, that “End-to-End Encryption keeps us safe”. This letter will be published shortly. This webinar and roundtable will explore the more controversial aspects of the Online Safety Bill, and why there is so much pushback to some of its articles.
