ISOC-NY TV Show 2pm today – A Conversation with Edward #Snowden at #hopex @MNNprogramming
Today, Wednesday July 30 2014, the ISOC-NY TV show will present a truncated version of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden‘s appearance at the Hackers on Planet Earth (HOPE X) Conference on July 19 2014. Via Google hangout (and 7 proxies) Snowden, exiled in Russia, talked with Daniel Ellsberg, who himself released the Pentagon Papers in 1971, plus answered questions from the Internet community as moderated by Trevor Timm, executive director of the Freedom of the Press Foundation. WEBCAST NOON TODAY: Fifth Generation (5G) Wireless @InternetSociety #IETF90 #5G
Today, Thursday July 24 2014, in the IETF 90 version of the IETF Thursday Speaker Series, Erik Dahlman will address the topic of 5G. Discussions on 5G wireless access have rapidly intensified during the latest two years. 5G wireless access is seen as the long-term enabler of the overall networked society, not only providing enhanced mobile broadband access but being a tool to provide wireless connectivity for any kind of application. This speech will provide an overview of the state of 5G efforts around the world. We will discuss the specific requirements and challenges being identified for 5G wireless access and the different technology components and alternatives being considered. Also outlined will be a possible time schedule for 5G in ITU and 3GPP. The session will be webcast live via the Internet Society Livestream Channel.

On July 18 2014 the Congressional Internet Caucus Advisory Committee (ICAC) hosted a panel The NSA Surveillance Programs: Assessing The Damage to U.S. Commerce, Confidence & Credibility. It has been one year since the sweeping NSA surveillance programs were revealed by controversial leaker Edward Snowden. As Congress considers reforming these programs we need to also assess the impact that this controversy has had on U.S. commercial interests, on our confidence in our leaders, and on U.S. credibility both globally and domestically. The revelations could not have come at a worse time for the U.S. tech industry, which was poised to lead the worldwide market in cloud computing. And many accounts indicate that other tech sectors are feeling the impact of the controversy when approaching international markets. Can we quantify the impact on American business? Have the revelations also impacted the confidence and credibility of the U.S. government? Some world leaders — whose own phones had been accessed — have expressed unfeigned outrage about the scope of surveillance. Our panel will discuss these issues and try to quantify the impact against some benchmarks. On Wednesday July 16 2014 the Internet Governance Forum – USA (IGF-USA) 2014 is a full day conference at George Washington University in Washington, DC. The IGF-USA 2014 will bring together thought leaders from across the Internet multistakeholder community to highlight and engage in discussions about key issues that will drive the future of the Internet, and formulate consensus to bring to the global IGF in Istanbul in September. The format is OPENING PLENARY – MORNING BREAKOUTS – LUNCH – PLENARY PANEL – AFTERNOON BREAKOUTS – CLOSING PLENARY. As an extension of the DC event, in the afternoon, ISOC-NY members will gather at Thoughtworks NYC for their own remote breakout session, which will be summarized and a video submitted to the final DC plenary. Sunday July 6: @WikimediaNYC AGM and Wiki-picnic in Central Park #wikipedia #wiknic
On Sunday July 6 2014 Wikimedia NYC Chapter will hold it’s Annual General Meeting. The meeting will be followed by the local edition of the Great American Wiknic, an annual wiki-picnic held in cities across the United States on or around a common day every summer. The picnicking area is the southwest section of the Great Lawn, north of the Delacorte Theater. The picnic will last from 1 PM to 8 PM. As a wiki-picnic, it’s the “picnic anyone can edit” – which means potluck.

Today Thursday 3 July 2014 the 5th Kenya Internet Governance Forum (KIGF) is underway in Nairobi. This year’s theme is “Connecting Counties for Enhanced Multistakeholder Internet Governance”. The KIGF provides stakeholders drawn from the Government, Private Sector, Civil Society, Academia and the Internet Community with an opportunity to increase their understanding of ICT and Internet Governance issues that are pertinent to the country. By correlating these issues with socio-economic, political, culture and development will strengthen the Internet Governance community of practice evolving in the East African region.
