On 17 June 2026, the Interplanetary Networking Special Interest Group (IPNSIG) presented an IPNSIG Academy Keynote ‘Multiple Base Lunar Concept of Infrastructure and Operations‘.

On the Moon, humans in the loop in a lunar context presents a unique opportunity and challenge. Utilizing multi lunar bases and extended surface mobility a concept of operations can emerge to maximize the potential of science, industry, and advancement of humanity onto the lunar surface. Considering the challenges and more important the opportunities, the early feasibility of operations with specific capabilities will be presented. Overlapping constraints include large system mass flow, surface mobility, thermal, life support, radiation, and exhaust plume constraints.

On March 26, 2026,  the International Institute of Outer Space Law Working Group on International Law Aspects of Interplanetary Internet (IISL WG-IPN), in association with the United Nations University Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU-CRIS), hosted a webinar ‘Building the Interplanetary Internet: Infrastructure and Technical Foundations‘. Drawing on decades of work at the intersection of space communications and network engineering, Dr Keith Scott outlined the physical architecture, protocols, standards, and technical frameworks required to enable a resilient communication system across the solar system.

On Wednesday October 8, 2025, at 2pm-3pm EDT (18:00-19:00 UTC) the Interplanetary Networking Special Interest Group (IPNSIG) presents an IPNSIG Academy Keynote ‘Interplanetary and Relativistic Distributed Computing‘. Siddhartha Jayanti will examine interplanetary distributed systems, such as the Interplanetary Internet, and the Global Positioning System (GPS) which are subject to the effects of Einstein’s theory of relativity. In this talk, we will formulate a unified computational model for relativistic and classical distributed computing systems and study the relationship between properties of distributed algorithms deployed on the two types of systems.

How can the Interplanetary Internet help us solve terrestrial networking challenges today? This keynote explores the Delay and Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) architecture—originally designed to handle vast distances, disruptions, and celestial mechanics in space communications—and shows why its principles apply equally well here on Earth. Samo Grasic will dive into the key DTN characteristics that make it robust, reliable, and resilient, and examine concrete examples of DTN’s benefits for terrestrial use cases. Since 2016 Samo has been employed at Dálvvadis Economical Association, where he leads the design and development of the Nomatrack LoRa-DTN platform. This platform, specifically crafted for reindeer herding purposes in remote Arctic environments, has been widely deployed by the Dalvvadis association in the north of Sweden.

The Interplanetary Internet is built on the foundations of space communications and networking. This presentation introduces space communications and networking in the context of the Interplanetary Internet. Starting with key issues that affect space communications, such as distance and celestial mechanics, this presentation establishes the basics for communications in space. We also review the space protocol stacks and the Delay and Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) architecture and protocols. The presentation concludes with a summary of critical applications and use cases for the interplanetary internet on the Moon.

‘High-Rate Communications Across The Lunar Surface’ was listed within the top 5 of NASA ESDMD’s Shortfall Ranking in 2024. Lunar communications require ground stations on Earth, comm relay satellites orbiting around the Moon, and lunar surface networks such as 5G technologies. As a Japanese telecommunications service provider, KDDI has a long history of providing wired and wireless networks and satellite communication services. Shuichi Ichimura will cover how KDDI collaborates with space agencies and other companies to expand its capability to the Moon.

isoc liveOn Tuesday August 13, 2024, at 5pm-6pm EDT (21:00-22:00 UTC) the Interplanetary Networking Special Interest Group (IPNSIG) presents an IPNSIG Academy Keynote ‘DTN over Lasercom Relay‘. NASA recently concluded a series of DTN experiments and demonstrations with the International Space Station over laser communications links through NASA’s Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) payload in geosynchronous orbit. Demonstrations included file transfers and streaming video through multiple nodes, paths, and scenarios. Dave Israel, Goddard’s Near Space Network Architect and LCRD Principal Investigator will update us on the lasercom demonstration and its relation to the future of the Near Space Network and LunaNet. He will be joined by Alan Hylton, PI for the LCRD DTN Experiments, and Dan Raible, PI for the High-Rate DTN (HDTN) project.

ISOC LIVEOn Thursday May 30, 2024, at 5pm-6pm EDT (21:00-22:00 UTC) the Interplanetary Networking Special Interest Group (IPNSIG) presents an IPNSIG Academy Keynote ‘Low-cost movable and static wireless sensor node for future Lunar explorations‘.

Low-cost and small wireless sensor nodes hold significant promise for future lunar explorations. These nodes can be employed for in-orbit inspections and in-situ data collection on the lunar surface. Two different types of wireless sensor nodes will be presented: movable and static. Movable nodes, such as small robots, can operate on the exterior surfaces of rovers, landers, and spacecraft, performing inspection sensing and monitoring the performance of their host vehicles. A notable project within this framework is the development of the “AstroAnt,” a miniature robot slated for deployment to the Lunar South Pole during the IM-2 mission in 2024-2025. The AstroAnt will work on the top panel of the MAPP-1 lunar rover, collecting thermal data from various positions to monitor the rover’s thermal system performance. In addition to movable nodes, ballistically deployed wireless sensor nodes can be “shot” out from rovers or landers to areas of interest, where they can remain to collect simultaneous data from different positions over the long term.
