The PAWR program is a joint effort by the National Science Foundation and a a wireless Industry Consortium to create city-scale testing platforms to accelerate fundamental research on wireless communication and networking technologies. The PAWR Project Office (PPO), run by US Ignite, Inc., and Northeastern University, is managing this $100 million public-private partnership to stand-up and oversee these eventual testing platforms. The goal: support creative, open-source ideas for making the Internet more accessible, decentralized and resilient. The challenges seek prototypes and designs that either a) provide connectivity during disasters or b) connect the unconnected. This launch event will allow participants to learn more about the NSF WINS Challenges, meet others who are interested in applying, discuss other wireless projects happening in your area, and brainstorm solutions with potential teammates. LivestreamOn Saturday April 22 2017 the National Science Foundation and Mozilla will host a launch event for the Wireless Innovation for a Networked Society Challenges at eBay’s office in NYC. These competitions, which have $2m in prizes, challenge the public to identify and demonstrate solutions to further wireless networks in two scenarios. (1) The Off-the-Grid Internet Challenge aims to find wireless solutions for communication that can be rapidly deployed in post-disaster situations where Internet access is unavailable or compromised. (2) The Smart Community Networks Challenge aims to find wireless solutions for communication that can be built on top of existing infrastructure to enhance Internet connectivity in communities that need greater access. Each challenge will consist of two stages: a Design Concept Stage and a Working Prototype Stage. If you wish to attend in person RSVP here. The 2010 Open Internet Order and its 2014 proposed rules apply a lighter regulatory touch to wireless broadband than to traditional fixed-line technologies. Virginia Tech Engineering Professor Jeffrey Reed, Berkeley Business Professor Michael Katz, and Boston College Law Professor Daniel Lyons will discuss whether wireless technologies should be treated differently. CTIA-Wireless Association President Meredith Atwell Baker will provide introductory remarks. Moderator is Professor Christopher Yoo of the University of Pennsylvania.
