On Tuesday July 22, 2014 the Internet Society’s New York Chapter (ISOC-NY) is, along with GarysGuide, Npower, Per Scholas, LaunchLM, and the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, partnering with the New York Technology Council to host the NYTECH Summer Networking Bash 2014 – a fun evening of drinks, food, music, new friends, and plenty of air-conditioning. On May 2 2013 New York Technology Council (NYTECH) and the CUNY Institute for Software Design and Development (CISDD) presented ‘Trends in Database Technologies‘ at CUNY Graduate Center NYC. Over the last few years we’ve seen a range of NoSQL stores from MongoDB to Cassandra to Neo4j break the traditional dominance of relational databases. In this talk hackNY Evangelist Peter Bell discusses the evolving use cases for the four main types of NoSQL data stores and then looks at the next big thing in databases – immutable data stores like diatomic. The Internet Society’s New York Chapter (ISOC-NY) will be providing webcasting services to the International Space Apps Challenge’s NYC location this weekend, April 20-21 2013. The International Space Apps Challenge is a two day “codeathon” now in its second year. 83 cities around the world will participate making it officially the World’s Largest Hackathon ever! Dynamically formed teams compete to utilize publicly available space and data to design innovative “solutions” to a pre-determined series of global “challenges.” Not just NYC but many other locations will be webcasting via uStream so there will be plenty of opportunities to check out the action.

At 2pm today, Wednesday 10 April 2013, the ISOC-NY TV show will present an edited version of a recent New York Technology Council meeting – Unleashing the Power of Data feat. CartoDB, Foursquare & Public Lab, itself a preliminary to the International Space Apps Challenge, a two-day hackathon led by NASA that is taking place on April 20-21, 2013 in New York City (for which ISOC-NY is sponsoring the live webcast) plus 74 other locations around the world. The meeting discussed various ways that citizen scientists can gather, manipulate, and access data. The tv show, which airs from 2-3pm, may be viewed via Manhattan Cable or online via the MNN website.

The Internet Society’s New York Chapter (ISOC-NY) and the New York Technology Council (NYTECH) joined the Public Interest Registry (PIR) in presenting a midday symposium “Mitigating DDoS Attacks: Best Practices for an Evolving Threat Landscape” in New York City on December 5 2012. Participating organizations include Afilias, Google, Neustar, M3AAWG, Symantec, EFF, and De Natris Consult. The event was webcast live via the Internet Society Chapters Livestream Channel. On Thursday October 11 2012 the New York Technology Council and ISOC-NY hosted author Andrew Blum discussing his book Tubes: A Journey to the Center of the Internet. Andrew’s book, prompted when his Internet was disconnected by a squirrel, accessibly examines the raw physical infrastructure of the network, and the people who put and hold it together. Video is below.

One point he made in the talk was that the only people that wouldn’t give him access to their inner workings were Google. Within days after the talk Google announced a new datacenter info website including a street-view walk-through their Lenoir NC data-center.

On January 9, 2012 at Google NYC, the New York Technology Council presented a “Cutting-Edge Technology Showcase” to demonstrate “awe-inspiring technologies available today”. These included augmented reality games, body-imaging health applications, instant language translation and object recognition in cellphones, and on-demand 3D printed product marketing.

On Wednesday January 25 2012 the New York Technology Council will host author David Weinberger to discuss aspects of his new book, “Too Big to Know: Rethinking Knowledge Now That the Facts Aren’t the Facts, Experts Are Everywhere, and the Smartest Person in the Room Is the Room.” David is co-author of the best-seller The Cluetrain Manifesto, which Information Week called the most important business book since Tom Peter’s In Search of Excellence. He is also the author of the critically-acclaimed Small Pieces Loosely Joined: A Unified Theory of the Web and Everything Is Miscellaneous: The Power of the New Digital Disorder.

David is currently a senior researcher at Harvard Law’s Berkman Center for the Internet & Society, Co-Director of the Harvard Library Innovation Lab at Harvard Law School, and is a Franklin Fellow at the United States State Department. He is a board member of OneWebDay.
