RECORDING – ISOC UK: Interoperability in AI Safety Governance Ethics, Regulations, and Standards

On 28 November 2025, the Internet Society United Kingdom Chapter (ISOC UK) hosted a webinar ‘Interoperability in AI Safety Governance Ethics, Regulations, and Standards‘. Dr. Yik Chan Chin, Associate Professor at Beijing Normal University, and David A. Raho, PhD researcher at Sheffield Hallam University,  presented their collaborative policy report ‘Interoperability in AI Safety Governance‘, developed through the United Nations University Institute in Macau. This landmark study brings together perspectives from four jurisdictions, the UK, China, South Korea, and Singapore, to explore the ethical, legal, and technical dimensions of AI safety governance. This presentation not only shared the key findings of the global report , but also provided a deep dive into the UK’s role in shaping a governance ecosystem that is both globally informed and locally grounded.

On Monday May 15 2023 at 17:00-18:00 BST (16:00-17:00 UTC) the Internet Society UK England Chapter presents a talk ‘Data Governance in the Internet’s Operational Institutional Complex’ at the London School Of Economics.

Internet governance often focuses on the institutional and policy implications of well known organizations such as ICANN and the IGF. While these organizations are significant, there is a much broader landscape of operational institutions that contribute to the day-to-day operations, security, and stability of the Internet’s infrastructure, what is referred to here as the operational institutional complex. In this talk, Jesse will present the important role of these operational institutions through the lens of data governance, highlighting the formal and informal information, data, and knowledge sharing relationships at play in day-to-day operations. To illustrate the importance of these organizations’ data governance relationships, Jesse Sowell will illustrate these concepts by highlighting two efforts to formalize data governance relationships: ISOC’s MANRS project and ICANN’s KINDNS project.

WEBCAST – Webinar and Roundtable: Understanding the UK Online Safety Bill

livestreamOn Thursday 10 June 2021. at 16:00 BST (15:00 UTC) the Internet Society UK England Chapter hosts a webinar and roundtable ‘Understanding the UK Online Safety Bill‘. On 12 May 2021 the UK Government published the draft Online Safety Bill, calling it a “manifesto commitment to make the UK the safest place in the world to be online while defending free expression.” The Bill contains several proposals including some suggesting that Encryption should be weakened through various methods. This has generated much pushback from UK entities and the Internet Society has drafted an online letter to members of the UK Parliament, co-signed by dozens of organisations, that “End-to-End Encryption keeps us safe”. This letter will be published shortly. This webinar and roundtable will explore the more controversial aspects of the Online Safety Bill, and why there is so much pushback to some of its articles.

livestreamOn Thursday 3 June 2021. at 16:00 BST (15:00 UTC) the Internet Society UK England Chapter hosts a webinar ‘Rebuilding and Enhancing Trust in Algorithms Policy‘. This webinar is based on the presentation of the policy implications and recommendations based on the outcomes of the EPSRC funded ReEnTrust project. ReEnTrust was a collaboration of the Human Centred Computing Group at the University of Oxford, the Artificial Intelligence Applications Institute (AIAI) at the University of Edinburgh, and the HORIZON Digital Economy Research at the University of Nottingham. An invite-only event was organised last week by the Project Leaders with the All Party Parliamentary Group on Data Analytics (APGDA). The project results were so impressive that they merit being shared more widely – thus this Webinar. Algorithms control everyone’s experience of the Internet – it is time that you find out how and learn what needs to be done to mitigate this problem.
