On Tuesday March 6 July 2021 at 13:00-14:00 UTC the Internet Society hosts a webinar ‘Moving towards an Interconnected Africa Report Launch‘. In 2010, the Africa Internet technical community embraced the 80/20 Initiative – an ambitious vision to have 80% of all Internet traffic locally accessible with only 20% being sourced internationally by 2020. In this webinar we will try to understand what has changed across the continent during this period and what lessons can we draw from this initiative going forward using the findings from our latest study, “Moving Toward an Interconnected Africa: The 80/20 Initiative”.

The global Internet industry is consolidating. More traffic emanates from fewer autonomous systems every day, primarily due to the growth of global cloud & content delivery services. As more content and services migrate to their platforms, they work to expand their private global networks to the Internet’s edge via undersea cables, terrestrial networks, and data centers where they interconnect directly with eyeball networks.

This installment of the Virtual Peering Series – Africa will explore what this phenomenon means for Internet exchange points (IXPs) in Africa and around the world.

This session aims to understand the behavior of traffic at African IXPs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Was there significant traffic increase due to the lockdown? Were there countries where there was a decrease in traffic mainly because people traditionally accessed more Internet from their offices? How critical are IXPs in these situations? It would also be relevant to understand the inter-regional traffic pattern during the pandemic.

livestreamOn Tuesday 23 June 2020 at 13:00 UTC the Internet Society hosts a webinar to mark the release of a new report ‘Anchoring the African Internet Ecosystem: Lessons from Kenya and Nigeria’s Internet Exchange Points Growth’. Between 2012 and 2020, a vibrant community in Kenya and Nigeria, dedicated to Internet peering, helped dramatically boost the levels of Internet traffic that is locally exchanged from 30% to 70%. This has led to significant cost savings for participating networks. It has also positioned these two countries as the primary regional peering hubs in East and West Africa. This webinar’s speakers are some of the people, representing the key players, that contributed to the success.
