On Monday, 21 September 2026 at 09:00–16:30 EDT (13:00–20:30 UTC), the United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies (ODET) hosted ‘UN Digital Cooperation Day 2026‘ at Ease, 605 3rd Avenue, New York City, during the High-Level Week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

Under the theme ‘Shaping A Global AI Future Through Science, Policy, and Capacity‘, the day brought together government representatives, the private sector, civil society, academia, and industry leaders to showcase country-led deliverables and how digital cooperation is being translated into action on the ground. Centered on AI from the ground up, it explored the building blocks of national digital transformation, with discussion focused on practical country experiences, lessons learned, and opportunities to accelerate impact through collaboration and partnership.

The programme launched ODET’s Blueprint for National AI Strategies, with its first country application in Lesotho; a strategic partnership between ODET and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) on AI across the disaster risk reduction cycle; and ‘The Global Digital Compact in Practice‘, a magazine of stories from the UN Digital Cooperation Portal marking two years since the adoption of the Global Digital Compact.

It also marked the launch of the first thematic brief by the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI. Session partners included the Slovak Republic, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations, the Pakistan Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (PVARA), UNDRR, the EkStep Foundation, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), UN-Habitat, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

On Friday, 18 September 2026 at 10:15–11:15 EDT (14:15–15:15 UTC), the United Nations Group on the Information Society (UNGIS) hosts ‘UNGIS: Stronger Together — Advancing Digital Cooperation Across the UN System‘, a hybrid thematic session of the WSIS Forum 2026, in NYC.

As digital transformation reshapes societies and economies, and the UN system reflects on becoming more efficient, agile and responsive, stronger coordination across UN institutions matters more. UNGIS is the inter-agency mechanism advancing coherent and inclusive digital cooperation, and the WSIS+20 review reaffirmed its relevance. Since the WSIS+20 Resolution (A/RES/80/173), UNGIS has set up the Task Force on Strengthening Financial Mechanisms for Digital Development, launched the Multistakeholder Consultation Group, submitted the Joint Implementation Road Map for WSIS–GDC Coherence to the 29th session of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD), and welcomed UNICRI, UNODA, UNSSC and UN-OHRLLS as new members.

The session will present examples of inter-agency collaboration in connectivity, digital inclusion, digital public infrastructure, capacity development, data cooperation and emerging technologies, and discuss how UNGIS can support implementation of the WSIS+20 Outcome Document and the Global Digital Compact (GDC), with contributions from UN entities, Member States, the private sector, civil society, academia and technical communities on multistakeholder partnerships and coordinated support to countries.

WEBCAST SEP 20- CITI Governance – Digital Economy Agreements and Digital Partnerships: Modular Paths to International Cooperation

isoc live

isoc liveOn Wednesday September 20 2023 at 11:00-12:30 EDT (15:00-16:30 UTC) the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information, as part of its Global Digital Governance series, presents a webinar ‘Digital Economy Agreements and Digital Partnerships: Modular Paths to International Cooperation‘.

Digital Economy Agreements and Digital Partnerships are new approaches to international cooperation and policy convergence. Governments from the Asia-Pacific, Latin America and Europe have established a handful of these arrangements since 2020, and more are in negotiation. They use modular architectures to treat individual issues separately within an integrated framework. Modular approaches allow policymakers a much greater flexibility to mix different types of commitments and forms of cooperation.

The arrangements have institutionalized varying models of cooperation on many difficult issues: transparency, supply chains, inclusion, identities, cross-border data flows, forced data localization, online customs duties and the trade treatment of digital products, business and trade facilitation, e-invoicing and certifications, the protection of source code, cybersecurity, consumer protection, privacy and data protection, open government data, standards and interoperability, fintech and e-payments, innovation and regulatory sandboxes, artificial intelligence and support for small and medium-sized firms.

Among the many outstanding questions are how impactful they can be, and whether more major digital countries will pursue them. China is seeking to join a key one. And the United States is centrally involved in parallel initiatives that have some commonalities, e.g. the digital work streams of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity and the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Technology Council.

This webinar assembles a panel of expert analysts to assess these new institutional frameworks and consider their potential for the future of digital cooperation and governance. As always, the panelists’ conversation will be followed by an open dialogue among all participants.

WEBCAST JUN 22- CITI Governance – Function Follows Form: The Proposed UN Digital Cooperation Forum

isoc live

isoc liveOn Thursday June 22 2023 at 11:00-12:30 EDT (15:00-16:30 UTC) the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information, as part of its Global Digital Governance series, presents a webinar ‘Function Follows Form: The Proposed UN Digital Cooperation Forum‘.

On June 5, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres presented a policy brief on his Global Digital Compact initiative to the General Assembly. Among the brief’s ideas is a proposal to create an annual Digital Cooperation Forum (DCF). This new UN forum would not be a negotiation body, but would instead foster action-oriented dialogue and analysis concerning international cooperation on digital policy issues. A proposal like this has been anticipated since the SG’s High-level Panel on Digital Cooperation issued its report in 2019. The case for a DCF is being championed in particular by the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology. The proposal has yet to garner support but will be discussed by a ministerial meeting in September 2023 that is to help prepare the groundwork for the UN’s 2024 Summit of the Future.

The policy brief states that the DCF would coexist with existing bodies and processes like the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in an integrated hub and spoke system. However, aside from its presumably broader scope, in many respects the DCF appears to duplicate the IGF. Given that the IGF has long faced challenges from those governments that are unhappy with its multistakeholder character, the existence of a comparatively intergovernmental DFC could complicate the renewal of the IGF’s mandate at the 2025 WSIS+20 review. In addition, there are a number of other issues raised by proposing a new forum without specifying its substantive focus and institutional modalities or assessing the demand for one. The experiences over the past twenty years with failed proposals to create new institutions for global Internet and digital governance merits consideration in this context.

An inclusive dialogue is needed to determine whether the DCF vision can overcomes the potential barriers to its realization or at least contribute to strengthening international cooperation in other settings. To help with that task, this webinar assembles a panel of expert participants in the debate about the United Nations’ role in global digital cooperation and governance. The group will assess the driving issues and interests, potential negotiation dynamics and outcomes, and larger digital governance implications of the DCF proposal.
