Sunday March 8 2015 was the culmination of the Spring 2015 hackNY Hackathon at Columbia University. Dozens of student teams demo’d the hacks they had cooked up over the previous 21 hours using NYC startup APIs. This time round the event was webcast live by Major League Hacking via twitch.tv.

This weekend Saturday/Sunday Apr 5-6 2014 the Spring 2014 hackNY Student Hackathon will take place at at Columbia University’s Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. Every spring and fall, hundreds of students from scores of universities around the country flock to hackNY’s student hackathons, where they participate in collaborative and creative coding challenges in a 24-hour coding sprint. The events open with API demos from New York City startups selected by the student organizing committee, after which students work in teams to build projects based on these APIs. Students work around the clock, and the event culminates in a presentation before a panel of judges the next day. Both the API demos on Saturday and the Student demo project demos and judging on Sunday will be webcast live here on this page.

ISOC-NY will be a co-sponsor of the Fall 2013 HackNY Student Hackathon at NYU. This is the 8th hackathon in the hackNY series, which is now attracting student participants from colleges all over the country. On Saturday September 28 2013, from 2pm until 4pm, local tech companies will present the latest and greatest in their applied programming interfaces (API). Just 20 hours later, after a frantic coding all-nighter (pizza, doughnuts, coffee, and technical help are provided), teams of students will present their best efforts to crank out original applications to a distinguished panel of judges. ISOC-NY will webcast live both the API demos and the judging. The public is welcome to attend the judging, but not the API demos.

August 9 2013 was the final day of the 10 week long 2013 hackNY Summer Fellows program, which places a number of students from colleges as far away as California and Puerto Rico with NYC startups, and also houses them in NYU dorms. On the evening before, the fellows had the opportunity to demo either their intern work, or another project of their choice. In a 90 minute session 29 demos covered everything from sophisticated data visualizations to competitive twerking to music sharing using webRTC to displaying facebook as a unix file system to rooting out spam blogs on tumblr. On Saturday August 3 2013, Richard M. Stallman, author of the EMACS text editor, inventor of the GNU operating system on which Linux is based, and founder of the Free Software Foundation, was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame. Two days later, on Monday August 5 2013, he was here in NYC to speak at an Internet Society New York Chapter (ISOC-NY) and hackNY sponsored event at the Courant Institute at NYU. Richard Stallman will address the NYC technological community, including hackNY’s summer fellows, on the importance of utilizing and creating free and open software solutions, and opposing restrictive intellectual property regimes. On May 2 2013 New York Technology Council (NYTECH) and the CUNY Institute for Software Design and Development (CISDD) presented ‘Trends in Database Technologies‘ at CUNY Graduate Center NYC. Over the last few years we’ve seen a range of NoSQL stores from MongoDB to Cassandra to Neo4j break the traditional dominance of relational databases. In this talk hackNY Evangelist Peter Bell discusses the evolving use cases for the four main types of NoSQL data stores and then looks at the next big thing in databases – immutable data stores like diatomic. ISOC-NY Vice President Evan Korth is a co-founder of hackNY. On November 2 2011 he hosted the NY Tech Meetup’s second annual academic evening. This event featured demos from individuals who are attending or teaching at academic institutions such as NYU, Columbia, Parsons, Rutgers, Syracuse University, Waterloo University, and MIT.

The Internet Society’s New York Chapter (ISOC-NY) will present a webcast of hackNY’s Class of 2011 DemoFest tonight July 28 2011 from 6.30pm to 9.00pm, live from NYU’s Courant Institute. This year the number of student fellows is up – from last year’s 12 – to 35, representing 19 schools from 17 Universities.
The hackNY program, of which ISOC-NY is fiscal sponsor, pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment: a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup. At the DemoFest they will show the results of their efforts.
