WEBCAST 8,12,13 APR – Pacific Hackathon

livestreamOn Tuesday-Wednesday 12-13 April 2022 the Internet Society Pacific Islands Chapter (PICISOC) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will host a Pacific Hackathon. The event will bring together technologists and interested persons from around the region to develop a solution for the Pacific Island Association of NGOs (PIANGO). The challenge is to develop a structured platform for civil society organizations (CSOs) to engage with governments and each other on a regional and national basis. There will be a mentors pre-hackathon session on Friday April 8 2022. The Pacific Hackathon has support from the University of the South Pacific and the European Union.

Connected NYOn Saturday November 19 2016 the New York Mayor’s Office will host NYC Connected: Broadband Data Dig at Brooklyn Public Library. The public are invited to use available open data to develop insights into the current state of broadband in New York City, identify the effects of existing inequities and recommend ways to measure progress towards universal broadband. Specifically, 1) What public data related to broadband should the City use to inform policymaking and track progress, and how should the City analyze the data? 2) What factors and effects correlate to varying levels of broadband availability or broadband adoption? 3) What City assets or other resources can be used most effectively to address broadband inequities? The winning analyses will have the opportunity to pitch their “data digs” and recommendations to City officials including Dr. Amen Ra Mashariki, Chief Analytics Officer; Joshua Breitbart, Senior Advisor for Broadband in the Mayor’s Office; and Alphonso Jenkins, Deputy Commissioner for Telecommunications Planning at the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT).

hackNY Fall 2014The Fall 2014 hackNY Hackathon is taking place this weekend. The 24 hour hackathon – the 10th in the series, pitches students from a wide area against each other to produce the best projects using a set of APIs provided by local startups and tech firms. It commenced at 2pm yesterday with a set of API demos (see http://youtu.be/NhfezwWDWh4 ) and the students will begin demoing their projects at noon today, Sunday October 19 2014. The demos and judging will be webcast live via the Internet Society Livestream Channel.

hackNYThis weekend Saturday/Sunday Apr 5-6 2014 the Spring 2014 hackNY Student Hackathon will take place at at Columbia University’s Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. Every spring and fall, hundreds of students from scores of universities around the country flock to hackNY’s student hackathons, where they participate in collaborative and creative coding challenges in a 24-hour coding sprint. The events open with API demos from New York City startups selected by the student organizing committee, after which students work in teams to build projects based on these APIs. Students work around the clock, and the event culminates in a presentation before a panel of judges the next day. Both the API demos on Saturday and the Student demo project demos and judging on Sunday will be webcast live here on this page.

Last weekend February 8/9 2014 the New York Legal Hackers participated in an International Data Privacy Hackathon, along with colleagues in San Francisco and London. The New York location – the Made in NY Center in Dumbo, was webcast live by ISOC-NY via the Legal Hackers own YouTube channel.

The New York event kicked off with a spectacular panel of experts. Speaking were Jonathan Askin, Brooklyn Law School; Dona Fraser, ESRB; David Wainberg, AppNexus; Doc Searls; Amyt Eckstein, Moses & Singer; and K. Waterman, MIT Fellow.

At lunch on Saturday, there were two further keynote speakers: Susan Herman, Chair, ACLU, and Hon. Ann Aiken, Judge, District of Oregon. Judge Aiken challenged the hackers to come up with an app to aid released prisoners in successful reentry into society.

Around 6:30pm Sunday, after a brief talk by Michael Joseph Holland, Center for Urban Science & Progress (CUSP) at NYU, and Dazza Greenwoood, MIT Media Lab, about a forthcoming anthology Privacy, Big Data, and the Public Good, the judging got underway. Projects presented were Using Copyright to Remove Revenge Pornography Selfies; Terms of Service Helper; Playing with Tor; Cookie Jar; Re-Entry (as suggested by Judge Aiken); and Ghostdrop.

Finally the judging. The winner, Ghostdrop, took away a $1000 cash prize Runner up: Re-Entry got a silver GitHub account. Third place – Terms of Service Helper – got a 3D printed “giant-fracking” lock from Makerbot.

hackNYISOC-NY will be a co-sponsor of the Fall 2013 HackNY Student Hackathon at NYU. This is the 8th hackathon in the hackNY series, which is now attracting student participants from colleges all over the country. On Saturday September 28 2013, from 2pm until 4pm, local tech companies will present the latest and greatest in their applied programming interfaces (API). Just 20 hours later, after a frantic coding all-nighter (pizza, doughnuts, coffee, and technical help are provided), teams of students will present their best efforts to crank out original applications to a distinguished panel of judges. ISOC-NY will webcast live both the API demos and the judging. The public is welcome to attend the judging, but not the API demos.

iZoneIn January 2013 we noted the launch of the Gap App Challenge – a software development competition for programs to help middle school students excel in math. This week, out of 200 applicants, 4 winners were announced – winning $15,000 each – as well as some runners up.

The winners:

  • KnowRe – adaptive personalized learning processes.
  • Hapara – dashboards for Google’s Apps for Education
  • Mathalicious – creates lessons using real-life situations.
  • LiveSchool – real-time class tracking

On Wednesday May 29 2013 the winners demo’d their apps. There is an archived webcast .

Contestants have until June 7 2103 to submit their apps to potentially win up to $50,000 in prizes. At this event, after an introduction from the NYC Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), some of the City’s top digital talent – including reps from Etsy, Huge, Fifty Three, New York Times, Digg, and Foursquare itself – gave helpful design insights to the assembled hopefuls. DML5Today, Thursday May 9 2013, Facebook, The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Mozilla, and the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) are running the all-day Project:Connect Hackathon in NYC. $48,000 in prizes will be awarded to teams that develop tools to create a more equitable, social, and participatory internet.

This is also the launch event for the fifth annual Project:Connect-Summer Youth Programming Competition (DML5), administered by HASTAC. U.S. based organizations and institutions have until June 10 2013 to submit summer event and programming proposals. Programs should excite and enable youth to engage the web in civil, collaborative, productive, safe, and confidence-building ways, and support learning, youth development and civic engagement. Up to $10,000 will be awarded to successful applicants. All awarded programs will be considered part of and networked with the Summer of Making and Connecting program.

A related Open International Competition focused on Project:Connect will be announced on May 28, 2013.

Connected Learning is a movement that works to make it easier for youth to learn, connect, make, contribute, and share online. It calls on and encourages youth to become creators and stewards of an open, inviting, and safe web.
