ISOC LIVEAaron Swartz died on January 11 2013, committing suicide while being hounded by US prosecutors over his efforts to liberate academic journal articles. He was known both for his coding skills, helping create RSS, Creative Commons, Markdown, as well as his activism, founding ‘Demand Progress‘ and opposing SOPA/PIPA amongst others.

A portion of the May 2012 Internet Society live webcast of him describing the SOPA/PIPA fight at Freedom to Connect was shown at his memorial at NYC’s Cooper Union. The entire segment was repeated last year’s as part of ISOC LIVE’s 12 Days of Streams event.

VIDEO: #Unbound: A Tribute to Aaron Swartz @ArtForChangeInc Exhibit at #ThoughtWorksNYC @aaronsw

Internet Hall of Famer Aaron Swartz died on Jan 11 2014. Just over a year later an art exhibit Unbound: A Tribute to Aaron Swartz has been launched, both online and at ThoughtWorks in NYC, where Aaron worked. The exhibit is organized by Art for Change, a non-profit based In El Barrio in Harlem.

In the words of the curators:

“One year after his death, we pay homage to Aaron by launching an art exhibit: http://bit.ly/1j3w5C3. The exhibit is an artistic sociopolitical commentary that analyzes some of the issues Aaron tackled through his activism. “Unbound: A Tribute to Aaron Swartz” brings together artists and activist whom, much like Aaron, work tirelessly to challenge the status quo, disrupting unjust systems, giving voice to the voiceless and building movements for justice and equity. Aaron used technology as a tool. Artists use their art. Let us bring this exhibit everywhere!”

Artists presented include Ellen Pearlman of the Volumetric Society. ISOC-NY attended the opening on March 28 2014 where the following video was captured.

Terms and Conditions May ApplyThis Sunday November 17 2013 Demand Progress will present an online screening of Terms and Conditions May Apply – “an eye-opening presentation of how corporations and the government are tracking your every move on the Internet” – that has won several awards and been showing in selected theaters across the country over the summer. It was also shown to members of Congress at a special screening on Capitol Hill on October 29. Sunday’s online screening is free for the first 3,000 visitors (first come, first served at 4pm) and for $3 admission after all the free seats are filled. Early attendees will also be treated to a preview of “The Internet’s Own Boy”, a forthcoming Aaron Swartz Documentary. The film itself will screen at 5.15pm. At 6.35pm there will be an Internet Town Hall (via reddit AMA) with filmmaker Cullen Hoback, Ben Wizner of the ACLU, Tim Karr of Free Press, and Demand Progress staff. On February 19 2013 Lawrence Lessig marked his appointment as Roy L. Furman Professor of Law and Leadership at Harvard Law School with a lecture titled “Aaron’s Laws: Law and Justice in a Digital Age.” The lecture honored the memory and work of Aaron Swartz, the programmer and activist who took his own life on Jan. 11, 2013 at the age of 26. Internet Freedom DayIn a recent Wired article The Internet Deserves Its Own Holiday, writer Marvin Ammori suggested that January 18, the anniversary of the SOPA/PIPA blackout, be celebrated as Internet Freedom Day. The suggestion was well received and many event will take place this Friday, including this one in NYC. The unfortunate death of Aaron Swartz has both highlighted the issue and made the the day an opportunity for a wake. ISOC-NY will join other NYC groups on Friday to participate. Details below.

Last May ISOC-NY sponsored the live webcast of the Freedom-to-Connect 2012 Conference (F2C2012) via the Internet Society Chapters webcasting channel. One of the keynote speakers was Aaron Swartz, who tragically died last week. Since then the archived video of his speech has been viewed over 300k times It headed Cory Doctorow’s obituary on Boing Boing, and yesterday, Monday January 14 2012, it ran in full on the Democracy Now! tv show. Thanks to the folks at Democracy Now!, we now also have a full transcript, and thus have been able to add captions to the original. A Spanish translation is underway at AMARA, needs help.
