Network PropagandaOn October 4 2018 the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society hosted a book panel event Network Propaganda: Manipulation, Disinformation, and Radicalization in American Politics at Harvard Law School. Authors Yochai Benkler, Robert Faris, and Hal Roberts presented the themes of the book.   Empirical analysis of millions of news stories and social media posts is used to overturn the conventional wisdom that new technologies and foreign agents swung the 2016 election in Trump’s favor and drove the current sense of a “post-truth” media landscape. Rather, the authors argue that longstanding institutional, political, and cultural patterns in American politics have interacted with technological change since the 1970s to create a propaganda feedback loop in American conservative media – a dynamic that has marginalized center-right media and politicians, radicalized the right wing ecosystem, and rendered it susceptible to propaganda efforts, foreign and domestic. After the presentation there was a panel discussion with respondents Dr. Claire Wardle and Martha Minow.
