On Wednesday, May 20 2026 at 12:30-14:00 EDT (16:30-18:00 UTC) Folktech will join with Protopian Prize to host a Storytelling Workshop.

The Protopian Prize is a fiction contest that asks what we can envision as people working toward liberatory futures, meeting obstacles, and making real change. “Protopian”—a word coined by Kevin Kelly, one of the contest’s judges—means an achievable, optimistic future characterized by continuous, incremental progress rather than revolutionary leaps or a static, perfect state. Protopian stories imagine a future that is neither flawless nor catastrophic, but instead workably better than today. It’s about plausible progress rather than perfection or collapse.

In this event, via collaborative stories and exploring different modes of storytelling, a world will be imagined as it might be if Folk Tech principles infused digital technology, supporting daily life and interdependence without the extraction, exploitation, or surveillance found in most proprietary technology today

Fifty years ago, Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn sketched out ARPA’s TCP/IP internetworking protocol, the foundation for the Internet, Marty Cooper made the first cellphone call, and Federico Faggin led the development of the “8008,” the first 8-bit microprocessor that sparked the personal computing revolution. Each of these innovators – all Marconi Fellows – is still working hard to create the future. Attend this landmark event to hear stories, insights, and predictions for the future, in an open discussion with questions and answers.

On Thursday February 28, 2013 Vint Cerf spoke at the TED2013 conference in Long Beach CA. He was asked to respond to Danny Hillis’ earlier presentation, “The Internet could crash. We need a Plan B.” Vint, while confessing “Every time I get a webpage that comes up I’m sitting here thinking, ‘Holy Crap, it actually worked!”, expressed confidence in the Internet’s resilience, suggesting that – as much as a Plan B – we should be thinking about Plan C – something that might supersede the Internet entirely… Video below:

The Pew Internet Project and the Elon Imagining the Internet Center facilitate regular expert illumination of the likely future evolution of the Internet based on what we know today. They are delving into new issues and public participation is highly valued. Part of the process is a series of surveys of which the fifth is currently underway.

Among the issues being addressed in new questions are:

the future of money
the influence of gamification
apps vs. the Web and which will dominate
the influence of Big Data
the fate of “smart systems”
the influence of corporate responsibility
teens-tech-human potential
the impact of ICTs on higher education

The results will be made public online in free reports aimed at helping inform our future.
