NYC World IPv6 Launch event – Jun 6 @ NYU #ipv6 #v6launch
Organized by the Internet Society, World IPv6 Launch on 6 June 2012 is the designated date when organizations across the industry – including Internet service providers (ISPs), hardware makers, and web companies – prepare for and permanently enable Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) on their products and services as Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) address space runs out.
Last year, major web companies and other industry participants successfully enabled and tested IPv6 on their main websites for 24 hours on World IPv6 Day, which was held on 8 June 2011. World IPv6 Day only involved websites, and was just a day, this year in contrast the emphasis is across the entire spectrum of the Internet industry and is permanent.
Similar to last year’s successful NYC event, on Wednesday June 6 2012 ISOC-NY will present an informal discussion and celebration meetup at NYU starting at 7pm EDT. Among those attending will be Phillip Koblence, VP Operations (NYI), and Sagi Brody of Webair who will both give brief talks on their company’s IPv6 implementation efforts, after which we will repair to a nearby drinking establishment for social activities.
What: World IPv6 Launch Discussion and Celebration.
When: Wed. June 6, 2012 – 7pm-8.30pm
Where: Courant Institute NYU, Rm 201, 251 Mercer St. NYC
Who: Free. Public welcome, especially network admins!
Hashtags: #v6launch ; #ipv6

ANNOUNCE: Data Set Identifier Interoperability email list #dsii #data @IETF
A new IETF non-working group email list has been created to discuss Data Set Identifier Interoperability (DSII).
Purpose: This list will be focused on the persistent identification of data sets that are shared. One primary use case will be the inter-relation of scientific data sets produced by different research teams; other use cases might include media developed by different sources and combined into a common collection. The first topic of discussion is expected to be permanent identifiers for data sets: their format, how they are assigned and resolved. This will draw from existing methods such as DOI, URN, PURL. Access policies based on identifiers, discovery, association of meta-data, and data integrity are expected to be later topics.
List address: dsii@ietf.org

INFO: 5th ITU World Telecommunication Policy Forum in May 2013 #ITU #WTPF @InternetSociety
The Internet Society (ISOC) is preparing its engagement in the fifth ITU World Telecommunication Policy Forum (WTPF) that will be held in Geneva from 13 to 16 May 2013. This WTPF Info Doc for Members gives an overview of this conference, its preparatory process and schedule. Engagement with the ISOC community will be an important part of our preparation.
In a letter to the ITU’s Secretary General, ISOC expressed its desire to join the WTPF’s Informal Expert Group (IEG) – appointed to prepare the Forum – and were recently informed that this request has been approved. With regards to the theme of the Forum, several delegations have contributed suggestions for themes or opinions that the WTPF should consider. The Internet Society proposed that “Strategies for increasing affordable global connectivity: the critical role of IXPs” be chosen as the main theme and core topic for the Secretary General’s initial report and as the focus for discussions at the fifth WTPF in 2013.
Indeed, the Tunis Agenda (paragraph 50.b) clearly emphasizes the importance of this issue: “We acknowledge that there are concerns, particularly amongst developing countries, that the charges for international Internet connectivity should be better balanced to enhance access. We therefore call for the development of strategies for increasing affordable global connectivity, thereby facilitating improved and equitable access for all, by: (…) Setting up regional highspeed Internet backbone networks and the creation of national, sub-regional and regional Internet Exchange Points (IXPs).”
Experience in participating in the 2009 WTPF shows that input from sector members is, to some degree, less taken into consideration by the Secretariat than Member States’ contributions. However, our past submissions were highly valued by many Member States’ delegations.
The first meeting of the WTPF Informal Expert Group will be held on 5 June, in Geneva, where we expect the theme of the Forum to be decided. Look for an update around that time. Following this meeting, it will be possible to provide comments and suggestions on the organization of the Forum and the topics open for discussion.

REPORT: CEPT meeting on WCIT & WTSA (22-25 May 2012) @InternetSociety #WCIT #WTSA
The Internet Society (ISOC) participated in the CEPT Com-ITU meeting in Copenhagen on 22-25 May 2012. The CEPT is coordinating the european regional preparations for the 2012 World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT) as well as the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA).
The objective of this meeting was to prepare the CEPT submission to the next ITU Council Working Group on WCIT and to move forward with European Common Proposals (ECPs) for WCIT and WTSA.
Please find at the following link a report of the ISOC team’s observations at the meeting: CEPT ComITU May2012 report
The Internet Society, RIPE NCC and ICANN made a joint submission to this meeting regarding Calling Line Identification proposals for the ITRs, which resulted in a revised European Common Proposal explicitly ruling out IP addresses from the scope of the article. The CEPT also took on board a suggestion made by ISOC on cybersecurity, which resulted in the inclusion of the notion that the ITU should cooperate with all relevant stakeholders on cybersecurity frameworks and issues (revised WTSA Resolution 50).
The next CEPT preparatory meeting is scheduled for 10-14 September, and should be held in Copenhagen.

Video: We Are All Anonymous – the culture and politics of #anonymity online #anonymous #lulz
We Are All Anonymous – Gabriella Coleman, David Auerbach, and James Grimmelmann discuss the culture and politics of anonymity online at Triple Canopy, Brooklyn on May 23 2012.
What is the logic of Anonymous, the online army, agent of chaos, and seeker of justice? What is the relationship between the online message board 4chan, the legacy of Internet masquerade, and Occupy Wall Street? What does the thriving culture of anonymity online tell us about the depravations of Facebook and those who profit from it? Anthropologist and technology critic Gabriella Coleman and critic and programmer David Auerbach discuss these questions and their recent articles in Triple Canopy with lawyer and technologist James Grimmelmann.
