  VIDEO: @OpenBCI – Crowd-Sourcing Brain Research & Innovation @VolumetricSociety 

  On December 16 2013 the Volumetric Society of NYC hosted New York EEG researchers/Parsons instructors Joel Murphy and Conor Russomanno presenting OpenBCI, An Opensource Brain Computer Initiative at Culture Lab NYC. OpenBCI is a low-cost, Arduino-compatible, open-source EEG platform that gives anybody with a computer access to the electrical signals emitted by their brain. The second version of the device is the subject of a current kickstarter campaign. The project is also supported by DARPA. The presentation includes a demo. Video is below:

  After Glenn Greenwald first received his stash of secret documents from Edward Snowden, one of the first people he consulted was security expert, cryptographer, and writer Bruce Schneier, who helped him review and digest the documents. A few weeks back we saw Bruce give a briefing on Capitol Hill in Washington DC, where he advised lawmakers to rein in the NSA, and the Internet community to pro-actively design countermeasures. On December 12 2013, as a follow up to his Snowden and the Future talk series Eben Moglen hosted A conversation with Bruce Schneier at Columbia Law School. They talked about what we can learn from the Snowden documents, the NSA’s efforts to weaken global cryptography, and how we can keep free software tools from being subverted. The talk was webcast live via the Internet Society Chapters Webcast Channel, and video is below. Hopefully a transcript will be available soon.

  On Friday May 10 2013 the Internet Society’s New York Chapter (ISOC-NY) webcast the Sensemakers NYC Meetup event: Parsons Design and Technology Final Presentations live from Alley NYC. After a keynote from Peter Semmelhack, CEO of Bug Labs and a founder of the Open Hardware Summit, students from the New School’s Design and Technology (MFA) program demo’d their quantified-self final projects. These included: a movie recommendation engine based on biometric analysis; a dog tracking system; an EEG hacked from a child’s toy; a mental-focus-stimulator; a cinematic experience that reacts to your heartrate.   Open Hardware Summit – NYC 9/23/2010 #OSHW 

  The Open Hardware Summit will be a venue to present, promote and discuss the undergoing open source hardware movement. The summit will focus on hardware as a system, involving conversations on software, manufacturing, legal, and other factors surrounding open source hardware. It is taking place on September 23rd, at the New York Hall of Science – right before Maker Faire.

  The Open Hardware movement is engaged in nailing down the definition, currently OSHW v.0.3, of the term open source hardware and producing a real, and enforceable license, much like the Creative Commons License does for artistic creations and the GPL does for software.
