This event aims to gather a diverse group of experts, advocates, and stakeholders to discuss the multifaceted impacts of Internet disruptions on society, economy, and governance. The workshop will provide a platform for in-depth discussions, knowledge sharing, and strategic planning to mitigate the adverse effects of Internet shutdowns and explore sustainable solutions for maintaining uninterrupted access to digital communication.

  WEBCAST JUN 25 – Internet Shutdowns, and How to Stop Them 

  On Tuesday June 25 2024 at 09:00-10:30 EDT (13:00-14:30 UTC) the Internet Society Washington DC Chapter (ISOC-DC) and the Internet Society New York Chapter (ISOC-NY) in collaboration with Access Now will host a webinar ‘Internet Shutdowns, and How to Stop Them‘.

  It is an unfortunate fact that, in some regions of the world, our best efforts to make an ‘Internet for Everyone’ are all too often undercut by deliberate withdrawals of service, mandated by the powers that be. Three organizations have taken it upon themselves to shine light on this issue: Access Now, with its #KeepItOn advocacy campaign to oppose shutdowns; The Internet Society on its Pulse platform, which has not only a Shutdown Tracker, but also a Netloss Calculator to estimate the resulting economic damage; and Columbia Global Freedom of Expression, which specifically tracks legal challenges to shutdowns.

  Today, Tuesday February 26 2019 at 11am ET (16:00 UTC) the Internet Society Livestream Channel presents ‘The Internet as a force for social good – Avoiding Internet shutdowns in Africa‘. This is a recording of the Internet Society Nigeria Chapter webinar on February 14 2019. After an initial presentation by Chuks Okoriekwe, Research Fellow, African Academic Network on Internet Policy (AANOIP) ‘The Understated Value of an Undisputed Internet – Ending Internet shutdowns in Africa‘, a panel of seasoned veterans (Nnenna Nwakanma, Sunday Folayan, Boye Adegoke ) in the Nigerian Internet Community were joined by Berhan Taye of AccessNow and ISOC Zimbabwe’s Lisa Nyamadzawo. The conversation covered issues around Internet Shutdown, Fake News and Hate Speech. Additional speakers were Salvation Alibor and Tomiwa Ilori. The webinar is intended to sensitize participants and ISOC members of the implication and current trends on Internet shutdowns across Africa and the way it will impact the freedom of the expression, access to information and other related economic and human rights activities that has its operational base on the Internet. It also tried to identify necessary legislations/conventions/ policies within the context of Africa / Nigeria that can or cannot guarantee the open accessibility of the Internet. It also explored how to balance and engage the competing rights of stakeholders and the state actors. The webinar is intended to sensitize participants and ISOC members of the implication and current trends on Internet shutdowns across Africa and the way it will impact the freedom of the expression, access to information and other related economic and human rights activities that has its operational base on the Internet. It also tried to identify necessary legislations/conventions/ policies within the context of Africa / Nigeria that can or cannot guarantee the open accessibility of the Internet. It also explored how to balance and engage the competing rights of stakeholders and the state actors. The Session was moderated by Bukola Fawole-Oronti and Dewole Ajao of ISOC Nigeria Chapter, while the organization was done by the Programmes Secretary of the ISOC Nigerian Chapter – Caleb Ogundele.

  Earlier today, Thursday March 2 2017, Internews presented Internet Shutdowns and the Silencing of Dissent at Google in Washington DC. From nation-wide shutdowns in Uganda and Gambia to targeted ones in Cameroon and India, restrictions and full blackouts of internet service have become a favorite tool of autocratic and repressive regimes. Shutdowns have wide-ranging effects on everything from political speech to commerce. Internet freedom activists and policy experts from the front lines of shutdown battles discussed their advocacy work, the trends they are seeing, and how internet shutdowns affect the daily lives of their fellow citizens.     The issue with a shutdown is, of course, that it not only hurts the dissenters, but the folks that did the shutdown. It affects commerce, and trust in the infrastructure. That damage lasts long after the shutdown has gone away. It’s a little like cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face, as the saying goes.
