  On Monday February 28 2022 from 10am-5:15pm EST (15:00-00:15 UTC) the Internet Education Foundation presents the 2022 State of the Net (SOTN) conference in Washington DC.

  SOTN is America’s premier Internet policy conference and this year speakers include Senator Ed Markey (D-MA), Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), White House Chief Scientist Denice Ross, and Comcast EVP for Public Policy / Digital Equity Broderick Johnson.

US Broadband legislation is having an unprecedented moment – a reaction to the urgent need to expedite connectivity amid COVID-19. Congress is considering bills to add $2 billion to the Rural Health Care Program, $4 billion to the E-rate program, $9 billion for Lifeline, $80 billion for broadband infrastructure, and $1.2 billion for digital literacy. The panel will explore which bills will have the best chances of enactment, and what can be done to support these initiatives.   On April 9 2013 the Berkman Center hosted Derek Khanna talking about Disruptive Innovation in Washington, DC. Khanna gained notoriety late in 2012 after his paper ‘Three Myths about Copyright Reform and How to Fix it.‘ for the Republican Study Committee was later repudiated. This year he notably pushed the successful White House petition against cell phone unlocking prohibition, and spoke at Freedom-to-Connect. In this talk Khanna presents a strategy to address real and systemic problems related to technology and antiquated legislation, by re-framing the policy questions, winning small battles, and developing a working coalition to achieve positive technology policy reforms in an otherwise complacent Congress.

  ICAC celebrates 15 years of “safe harbor” protection for ISPs #netfreedom #freeculture 

  On October 19 2011 the Congressional Internet Caucus Advisory Committee (ICAC) celebrated the 15th anniversary of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (HR 1555), an addendum to the Telecommunications Act of 1996. It was Section 230 that introduced the rule of “safe harbor” for Internet Providers. The Q&A involves some high level discussion of the current state of Internet freedom. Video
