12 Streams 2021 #2 – Celebrating Ian Peter
Today, Monday December 27 2021, at 9:00pm EST (02:00 UTC Dec 28) in the second installment of the Internet Society Livestreaming‘s ‘12 Days of Streams‘ annual highlights, we celebrate Ian Peter, environmental activist and Australian Internet pioneer, who died yesterday. Ian Peter was also an Internet historian and leaves us nethistory.info, a comprehensive general reference.

Ian has been an outstanding leader in the evolution of the Internet from the 1980s to today. Those who never had the opportunity to meet him missed the chance to fully appreciate his kindness, dedication and sharp intellect. This wonderfully charming and bright Aussie was a key figure in the Internet’s early development and diffusion in the Asia-Pacific area. He was one of the original founding directors of the Association for Progressive Communications, the outstanding international network of organizations that has been and continues to do work that is crucial to the advancement of the Internet as a tool for the advancement of human rights via human communication.
We will always remember Ian for his passionate pursuit of the best possible future of global communication.
Today’s stream has two clips, via Janna, 1) a 1989 ABC TV report as Ian and colleague Mike Jensen launch Pegasus Networks in Terania Creek NSW 2) an Imagining the Internet Center at Elon University clip of Ian speaking at IGF 2008 Hyderabad in which he talks about “The Last Billion” people likely to be connected to the Internet 20 years into the future.
