‘High-Rate Communications Across The Lunar Surface’ was listed within the top 5 of NASA ESDMD’s Shortfall Ranking in 2024. Lunar communications require ground stations on Earth, comm relay satellites orbiting around the Moon, and lunar surface networks such as 5G technologies. As a Japanese telecommunications service provider, KDDI has a long history of providing wired and wireless networks and satellite communication services. Shuichi Ichimura will cover how KDDI collaborates with space agencies and other companies to expand its capability to the Moon.

isoc liveOn Saturday-Sunday October 5-6 2024 the Kingsborough Community College will be the Brooklyn NYC location of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA’s) International Space Apps Challenge (Space Apps). Space Apps is an international hackathon where multiple teams in locations around the world engage NASA’s free and open data to address real-world problems on Earth and in space.

This year’s theme is “The Sun Touches Everything,” and NASA Space Apps invites participants to consider the far-reaching influence of the Sun on Earth and space science.

isoc liveOn Tuesday August 13, 2024, at 5pm-6pm EDT (21:00-22:00 UTC) the Interplanetary Networking Special Interest Group (IPNSIG) presents an IPNSIG Academy Keynote ‘DTN over Lasercom Relay‘. NASA recently concluded a series of DTN experiments and demonstrations with the International Space Station over laser communications links through NASA’s Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) payload in geosynchronous orbit. Demonstrations included file transfers and streaming video through multiple nodes, paths, and scenarios. Dave Israel, Goddard’s Near Space Network Architect and LCRD Principal Investigator will update us on the lasercom demonstration and its relation to the future of the Near Space Network and LunaNet. He will be joined by Alan Hylton, PI for the LCRD DTN Experiments, and Dan Raible, PI for the High-Rate DTN (HDTN) project.

LivestreamThis Fri/Sat/Sun April 28/29/30 grassroots organizers from all across the planet stage the 2017 Space Apps Challenge hackathon at their local sites, a worldwide NASA Incubator Innovation program. Space Apps NYC, held at the spanking new SAP Next-Gen facility in Hudson Yards, will again be the ‘main stage’ for the entire global event. Before the weekend hackathon, a one-day conference will be held on Friday with speakers including astronauts Anousheh Ansari and Richard Garriott, plus Internet Society co-founder Vint Cerf. There will be multiple workshops. The entire event will be webcast live on the Internet Society Livestream Channel.

ipnsigToday Monday May 18 2015 the Internet Society’s InterPlanetary Networking Special Interest Group (IPNSIG) will hold its 2nd Annual InterPlanetary Networking Conference in Washington DC. The conference has the theme Showcasing Delay & Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN): the Emerging Standard for Space Data Communications. Last year’s conference (video) —Space Technology Innovations: Enabling Exploration Above, Improving Life Below—presented how DTN can enable space data communications as well as provide network services in constrained terrestrial network environments. This year the focus is upon DTN in the space arena. Speakers include Vint Cerf, Brett Willman & Suzanne Davidson – the NASA/Boeing team working on DTN aboard the International Space Station, David Israel & Donald Cornwell the NASA team who concluded the very successful Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration in late 2013 and who are planning the 2017 Laser Relay Communication Demonstration, Scott Burleigh, JPL’s chief DTN architect, Keith Scott who leads the Consultative Consortium for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) DTN working group that is standardizing DTN protocols, Fred Templin of Boeing who will demonstrate a potentially important new security enhancement to DTN, and Scott Pace, the Director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University. The conference will be webcast live on the Internet Society Livestream Channel.

isoc ny tvAt 2pm today, Wednesday 10 April 2013, the ISOC-NY TV show will  present an edited version of a recent New York Technology Council meeting – Unleashing the Power of Data feat. CartoDB, Foursquare & Public Lab, itself a preliminary to the  International Space Apps Challenge, a two-day hackathon led by NASA that is taking place on April 20-21, 2013 in New York City (for which ISOC-NY is sponsoring the live webcast) plus 74 other locations around the world.  The meeting discussed various ways that citizen scientists can gather, manipulate, and access data. The tv show, which airs from 2-3pm, may be viewed via Manhattan Cable or online via the MNN website.

International Space Apps Challenge – this weekend #spaceapps @intlspaceapps

The International Space Apps Challenge is a two day “codeathon” happening April 21-22 2012. Dozens of locations around the world will participate, including the International Space Station and McMurdo Station, Antarctica. The NYC contingent will be located at Pivotal Labs, where ISOC-NY is assisting with the webcast. Dynamically formed teams will compete to utilize publicly available space and data to design innovative “solutions” to a pre-determined series of global “challenges.” All the locations will be webcasting via uStream so there will be plenty of opportunities to check out the action.
