Core Internet values came under stress at the start of the war in Ukraine, with calls to “block” Russia from the Internet. A common statement “Towards the Multistakeholder Imposition of Internet Sanctions” was circulated. This session will examine the feasibility and desirability of such proposals.

At the Internet Society, we believe that the Internet is for everyone. Our work centers on increasing the Internet’s reach, reliability and resilience, as well as ensuring that the Internet remains open, globally connected, secure, and trustworthy. In Africa, ISOC has been carrying out and supporting many activities to help grow the Internet in Africa including supporting Community Networks, Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), increasing technical capacity and building communities of practice.

In addition, identifying areas to improve Internet resiliency via measurements has been carried out with the data publicly available on ISOC’s Pulse platform . Internet Resilience measurements have given a glimpse on areas whose improvement would improve the reliability of Internet connectivity in Africa. Could a framework document around improving resilience help regulators in providing an environment that supports the growth of a resilient Internet at national level? Join this lightning talk that will discuss the approach to an Internet Resilience framework document that ISOC is helping to develop for regulators that could help improve Internet access in the region

We address this new phenomenon through references to the SDGs and international law, exploring whether current policies offer plausible solutions to upcoming or potential problems.

ISOC LIVEOn Monday November 28 2022 at 14:00-15:30 UTC the Internet Governance Forum presents a session ‘Understanding Internet Fragmentation: Concepts and their Implications for Action‘, organized by the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information.

The Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) has designated “Avoiding Internet Fragmentation” to be one of the 2022 IGF’s five organizing themes. There likely will be many events on the program related to this topic, but what exactly does Internet fragmentation mean, and how does that meaning affect the actions that may be undertaken by states and stakeholders?

This session brings together prominent analysts and stakeholders from five continents, with varying and even divergent viewpoints, in the hope of working toward a higher level of consensus (or at least a more structured range of disagreements) on the core features, sources, forms, and consequences of Internet fragmentation, and what all these may mean for actions taken in response by states and stakeholders.
