On February 3 2014 New York City Foundation for Computer Science Education CSNYC Education Meetup hosted Women in CS – How to get girls interested and involved at Union Square Ventures NYC. After brief pitches for programs Dream it Code It Win It and Technovation, there were presentations from Ashley Gavin, a Curriculum Consultant for Girls Who Code, and Ruthe Farmer, Director of Strategic Initiatives, National Center for Women & Information Technology. Finally there was a Q&A with a panel of NYC girl computer science students. Video is below.

VIDEO: Access Code: Demo Day @Coalition4QNS

On July 29 2013 the Coalition for Queens presented Access Code: Demo Day at the See Me exhibition space in Long Island City, NYC. Access Code is an 8-week, 50-hour tech education and entrepreneurship development program that provides immigrant entrepreneurs with the skills & mentorship to build and launch high-tech companies. In the first program, over the past eight weeks, twenty-two students worked hard learning the ins-and-outs of iOS development, and then split into four teams each tasked with producing a working app. The program received support from the City, and no less than two Congresspersons, and two Councilmembers, including the Chair of the Economic Development Committee Karen Koslowitz, showed up to say a few words. A keynote – a lengthy homily on perseverance – was delivered by entrepreneur Nihal Mehta. Video is below, the actual demos start 45 mins in.

The meetup, for this month only, moves from its usual home at Brooklyn Law School to the Brooklyn Borough Hall, and will be graced by the presence of Borough President Marty Markowitz. The event is sold out.

NYC Gap App Challenge winners announced @nycgov @nycschools @iZoneNYC #gapapp

In January 2013 we noted the launch of the Gap App Challenge – a software development competition for programs to help middle school students excel in math. This week, out of 200 applicants, 4 winners were announced – winning $15,000 each – as well as some runners up.

The winners:

KnowRe – adaptive personalized learning processes.
Hapara – dashboards for Google’s Apps for Education
Mathalicious – creates lessons using real-life situations.
LiveSchool – real-time class tracking

On Wednesday May 29 2013 the winners demo’d their apps. There is an archived webcast .

Next Generation Leaders – apply now for @InternetSociety e-Learning programme ‘Shaping the Internet – History and Futures’

Applications are now open for the Internet Society’s Next Generation Leaders (NGL) e-Learning programme “Shaping the Internet – History and Futures.” (English, French and Spanish)

The Internet Society is pleased to call for applications from talented individuals seeking to join the new generation of Internet leaders, who will address the critical technology, policy, business, and education challenges that lie ahead.

For 2013 the Internet Society is offering two classes in English, one in French, and one in Spanish. All classes will start the week of 27 May 2013.

The course, “Shaping the Internet – History and Futures”, will be delivered by the Internet Society through its own e-Learning platform and learning methodology that features a combination of in-depth course materials, weekly online chats, group projects and a case study examination, all led by an expert moderator.

The NGL programme is designed to advance the careers of individuals who have the potential to become local, regional, and international leaders within the Internet technology, policy, and governance communities. The curriculum empowers participants to share their particular expertise with colleagues while acquiring knowledge in areas outside of their specialties.

Places in the eLearning course are strictly limited, so all applications will be subject to a thorough selection process. The deadline for applications is 15 April 2013.

VIDEO: NYC launches app challenge to help schoolkids learn math @nycgov @nycschools #gapapp

NYC Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and NYC Schools Chancellor Dennis M. Walcott today launched a new software development competition for programs to help middle school students excel in math. The Gap App Challenge invites developers to submit applications, games or other programs that focus on middle school math and can be used by students, teachers or parents. The winning programs will be announced this June and all submissions will be considered for school-based pilots to begin next fall. The competition is a part of the Department of Education’s Innovation Zone (iZone) program, which includes 250 schools that use new approaches to help students learn at their own pace. It is the first such competition to be led by a school district in the country, and also the first in a series of challenges the City will host to develop new teaching tools. The Mayor and Chancellor made the announcement at the East Bronx Academy for the Future, an iZone school, where they were joined by Principal Sarah Scrogin, Chief Digital Officer Rachel Haot and IDEO partner Duane Bray. Webcast: Creating Participatory Learning Through Performance – Oct 15 2011 1pm EDT

ISOC-NY President David Solomonoff is always ready to explore innovative and interesting aspects of Internet activity. On Saturday he will be (in his own words, “in my first live performance since dinosaurs were killed by the giant comet”) providing musical accompaniment for an online improvisational performance workshop as part of the Mobilty Shifts Conference at NYC’s New School.

The workshop, Creating Participatory Learning Through Performance , organized by Josephine Dorado, will focus on improvisational performance as a framework for online collaboration and distributed learning, leveraging the affordances of shared virtual world space towards immediate collaboration, thereby creating richer online rapport and an optimal environment for participatory learning. Through task-based performance games inside a virtual world, the students in Josephine Dorado’s Collaboration in Networked Environments class at the New School will participate as performers and will connect with remote participants/performers, including a partnering Internet Society event in Philadelphia, weaving a theatrical performance together that encourages active listening and interaction, allowing participants to instantly connect and cooperate, regardless of geographical location or previous experience with digital media or performance. The performance will be followed by a Q&A in which the performative elements and their relation to online collaboration will be explained along with feedback from student participants. After that, the audience will have an opportunity to ‘embody’ an avatar and participate in an impromptu dance, thereby experiencing the immediacy and connection.

It is possible to attend in person, or via Second Life, and the event will be webcast via the Internet Society Chapters Webcasting Channel.

N.T.I.A. launches Digital Literacy Initiative #btop #education @NTIAgov

On May 13 2011 The U.S. Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) launched DigitalLiteracy.gov. The site’s goal, in partnership with nine Federal agencies, is to function as an online hub for librarians, educators, and other digital literacy practitioners to share content and best practices. Additional content is expected from recipients of Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) grants who are developing and implementing digital literacy training programs in their communities.

The site contains web 2.0 features that will support evolutionary improvement of its content.

Harlem’s Global Tech Prep – poster child for tech in NYC schools

A lengthy profile in Gotham Gazette details innovative implementation of technology in one of the city’s schools. Students at Global Technology Preparatory all get school issued Dell laptops, have flexible hours, online classes with remote teachers, stimulating and multilingual courseware.

The program is one of ten pilot schools in the Innovation Zone, or iZone initiative, a partnership between the City and corporate sponsors. The program will be expanded to 81 public schools in the 2010-2011 school year
