On Saturday Nov 25 2017, at 10am the Internet Society New York Chapter (ISOC-NY), with the support of the CSNYC+CSTA NYC Meetup will host a Workshop: Internet History for CS Teachers. In CS education there is currently a lot of emphasis on coding. Our aim is to, via Internet History, promote a wider understanding of open network infrastructure, its past, its values, and its future. This workshop will be conducted by Reuben Loewy, developer of the the ‘Living Online‘ Internet Studies curriculum in Princeton NJ. Special guest keynote speaker will be Internet Hall of Fame Pioneer inductee Prof. David J. Farber. Video from the workshop will be ISOC-NY’s contribution to the global Internet Society Digital Schools Chapterthon 2017. Lunch will be provided.

MEETUP: The Computers film + Q&A Weds 6/3

The Computers is a 20 minute documentary about the six women who, during World War 2, programmed – from scratch – the first all-electronic computer, the ENIAC. By the time they were finished, ENIAC ran a ballistics trajectory — a differential calculus equation — in seconds. Yet when the ENIAC was unveiled to the press and the public in 1946, the women were never introduced; they remained invisible. Featuring Movietone footage of the 1940s and never-before-seen interviews with the ENIAC Programmers, The Computers is an inspiring story – lost for almost 70 years – about the founding of technologies we cannot live without — by six incredible young women everyone should know.

After premiering at the Seattle International Film Festival on May 24, The Computers is now enjoying its first theatrical run at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema in NYC. ISOC-NY has been able to obtain 20 free passes for the 7pm screening this Wednesday June 3 2015, which will include a Q&A with Co-Producer Kathy Kleiman. Further tickets will be available at the box office for $10 a pop.

Today Thursday April 30 2015 the Dream it. Code it. Win it. Unleashing Opportunities with Technology. Awards Ceremony will be held at Cooper Union in NYC. “Dream it. Code it. Win it.” is a coding contest organized by The MIT Club of New York, The MIT Enterprise Forum of New York City, and TradingScreen to celebrate and reward creativity in Computer Science. College and High School students are competing to win over $50k in prizes. Winners will be announced at the ceremony. There will also be a number of brief panel discussions on how how computer science education can be used as tool to create many opportunities by solving problems or creating efficiencies across many industries. The event will be webcast on the Internet Society’s #2 Livestream Channel.

In 2014 the Internet Society’s New York Chapter (ISOC-NY) has been happy to sponsor video recording for the New York City Foundation for Computer Science Education. As part of the CSNYC’s goal to ensure that all children in NYC local public schools have access to computer science education, they host the CSNYC Education Meetup to help build a community of professional practice around computer science education. It also serves as an interface between the teachers and the local tech community. Topics in 2014 have included gender, game design, Papert & LOGO, careers, teaching, citizen science, and making. On February 3 2014 New York City Foundation for Computer Science Education CSNYC Education Meetup hosted Women in CS – How to get girls interested and involved at Union Square Ventures NYC. After brief pitches for programs Dream it Code It Win It and Technovation, there were presentations from Ashley Gavin, a Curriculum Consultant for Girls Who Code, and Ruthe Farmer, Director of Strategic Initiatives, National Center for Women & Information Technology. Finally there was a Q&A with a panel of NYC girl computer science students. Video is below.
