Made in NYYesterday, Tuesday February 19 2013, Mayor Michael Bloomberg visited the offices of Buzzfeed to launch the City’s “We are Made in NY” initiative. (Video below) Local tech companies can apply for permission to use the ‘Made in NY’ service mark in their products. There is already a list of almost a 1000 qualifiers. To qualify 75% of their production must be New York based. The mark has been in existence since 2005, mainly applied to films and tv. Further components of the initiative include training,  resources, job guidance, and exposure. Companies are being asked to submit 60 second videos.

The site says:

We Are Made In New York is an economic development initiative that supports the city’s vibrant tech community by highlighting job opportunities in the sector, celebrating the growing number of NYC-based digital companies, and providing access to resources and programs that help tech companies grow, and novices learn how to become part of the innovation ecosystem.

Launched by the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment in partnership with the New York Tech Meetup, We Are Made in NY highlights New York City’s burgeoning digital industry and underscores Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s commitment to strengthening the city as a global hub for innovation.

The same coalition is backing,as it did last year, a showcase of NY Tech startups, at SxSw – this is now known as Made in NY:Austin and has its own website.

VIDEO: NYC launches app challenge to help schoolkids learn math @nycgov @nycschools #gapapp

NYC Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and NYC Schools Chancellor Dennis M. Walcott today launched a new software development competition for programs to help middle school students excel in math. The Gap App Challenge invites developers to submit applications, games or other programs that focus on middle school math and can be used by students, teachers or parents. The winning programs will be announced this June and all submissions will be considered for school-based pilots to begin next fall. The competition is a part of the Department of Education’s Innovation Zone (iZone) program, which includes 250 schools that use new approaches to help students learn at their own pace. It is the first such competition to be led by a school district in the country, and also the first in a series of challenges the City will host to develop new teaching tools. The Mayor and Chancellor made the announcement at the East Bronx Academy for the Future, an iZone school, where they were joined by Principal Sarah Scrogin, Chief Digital Officer Rachel Haot and IDEO partner Duane Bray. NYC adopts open data law #nyc #opengov

nyc.gov - Always OpenNYC Council Member Gale A. Brewer has long campaigned for an Open Data statute for the City. Indeed her original public hearing was back in June 2009, when she first introduced draft legislation. Another public hearing was held in June 2010. The law has finally passed, and was signed into law by Mayor Bloomberg on March 7 2012.

The law has provisions such as:

  • City agencies until 2018 to get all their data online and searchable.
  • Data to be machine readable and available via an API.
  • DoITT to produce guidelines for City agencies by October 2012
  • Agencies to report what data sets they have by August 2013
  • Agencies to submit a compliance report before March 2014.
  • Data is to be made available in one central location at NYC.gov.
  • If agencies opt-out they must make public their reasons for doing so.
  • DoITT to consult with the public and open standards bodies to ensure usability.
