FRIDAY: Queens Open History #Wikipedia #Editathon @QueensLibrary #Queens #NYC

On Friday, December 6th the Queens Library, Wikimedia NYC, and the Metropolitan New York Library Council will host an all-day Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon and public training event at the Queens Library Central Branch. The event will be focused on Queens History, Queens historical figures, the Queens Library System, and the special topics covered in the Queens Archives.

Folders full of research and information about special topics in the Queens Library Archives will be available to make it easy to get started writing and editing Wikipedia articles about Queens and Wikipedians will be on site to provide basic and advanced training on editing articles and working with images.

Formal Training Presentations: 10:30-11:30am, 2:00-3:00pm (but informal hands-on help will be available all day!). You are encouraged to drop by at any time! Please join the Wikimedia NYC Meetup group.

Wikipedia Day NYC 2013 – Feb 23 at NYU #freeculture #nyc

The Wikipedia Day 12th Birthday Bash NYC is a celebration and mini-conference to be held on Saturday February 23, 2012, hosted at ITP at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and also supported by Wikimedia New York City, Free Culture @ NYU and other Free Culture Alliance NYC partners (which include ISOC-NY). The NYC celebration is one of a number of Wikipedia Day events being held in the United States and worldwide. Participation (and pizza and cake!) will be free, with room for ~100 participants, who should bring a photo ID for the door. All are welcome, and newcomers are especially invited to drop by to join the experienced Wikipedians/Wikimedians. In addition to the party, the event will be a modified unconference, with dedicated plenary sessions, lightning talks, and open space sessions.

Software Freedom Day (SFD) is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) that has occurred annually since 2004. This year’s NYC event will be at NYU ITP this Saturday Sep 15 2012. For events in other locations check the map.

Wiki World’s Fair / Free Culture World’s Fair – Governors Island NYC – July 7 2012 #freeculture #nyc

The Wiki World’s Fair / Free Culture World’s Fair will be held on Governors Island in beautiful New York Harbor on Saturday July 7 (raindate: Sunday July 8 ) as part of the Great American Wiknic, and in welcoming international visitors for Wikimania Takes Manhattan.

The event will combine a wiki-picnic and civic celebration in the area of the FIGMENT participatory art festival‘s arcade-themed artist-designed minigolf course, sculpture garden, and treehouse.

The celebration will be led by Wikimedians and Free Culture Alliance NYC, with DIY fair pavilions (bamboo poles to be provided!) for numerous represented Wikiverse and Free Culture initiatives.

Wiki-Gangs of New York is a civic editathon, Wikipedian meet-up and instructional workshop that will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2012, at the New York Public Library Main Branch.

Venue: Stephen A. Schwarzman Building (NYPL Main Branch), Margaret Liebman Berger Forum (Room 227).
Directions: Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street.

The next meeting for Wikimedia NYC is Sunday March 20 – this weekend – at Symposium Greek Restaurant @ 544 W 113th St (in the back room), on the Upper West Side in the Columbia University area.

This is a meeting for Wikipedia/Wikimedia volunteers and everyone else too, who has ever looked at Wikipedia and wondered what’s going on behind it. Amongst the topics will be planning for GLAMCAMP NYC in May, a project to digitize the content of Galleries, Libraries and Museums in the City.
