WEBCAST FRI/SAT: Theorizing the Web #TtW17

LivestreamOn Friday/Saturday April 7-8 2017 the seventh annual Theorizing the Web conference will take place at the Museum of the Moving Image in NYC. Theorizing the Web is an inter- and non-disciplinary annual conference that brings together scholars, journalists, artists, activists, and technology practitioners to think conceptually and critically about the interrelationships between the Web and society. We deeply value public engagement, and consider insights from academics, non-academics, and non-“tech theorists” alike to be equally valuable. Both days of programming will feature invited speakers as well as presentations from competitively selected open-submission system. Selected papers advance clear theoretical arguments; represent a diverse range of perspectives; embrace accessibility by demystifying jargon rather than using it as a crutch; and, importantly, appeal to concerns of power, social (in)equality, and justice. Each day the conference comprises three afternoon tracks, plus two plenary evening keynote sessions. The entire event will we webcast live.

MEETUP/WEBCAST TODAY: Premier Presentation of JacksonHeights.nyc @dotnyc @newvisionsdems

livestreanConnecting.nyc Inc.’s founding director Tom Lowenhaupt will present an overview of his organization’s development plans for the JacksonHeights.nyc domain on Thursday, January 12, at 8 PM. The presentation will be made at the Jackson Heights Jewish Center, 37-06 77th St., a short walk from the Roosevelt Avenue – Jackson Heights subway stop on the E, F, M, and R trains, and the 7 train’s 74th Street station. The occasion will be the regular monthly meeting of the New Visions Democratic Club. All are welcome to this free event.

Tom’s presentation will begin with a description of the .nyc TLD and the city’s hopes for its neighborhood names licensing program. Then, after a project history and timeline, he’ll describe the system’s initial features – a neighborhood resource directory and common calendar – and the ways neighbors and organizations may join in developing and using them. He’ll then speak of the long term potential as social and civic features are developed and introduced.

He’ll conclude with a discussion of the ways existing neighborhood organizations might benefit, and of the plans to transition control of the endeavor from Connecting.nyc to neighborhood residents.

Wikimedia NYCOn Friday, December 6th the Queens Library, Wikimedia NYC, and the Metropolitan New York Library Council will host an all-day Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon and public training event  at the Queens Library Central Branch. The event will be focused on Queens History, Queens historical figures, the Queens Library System, and the special topics covered in the Queens Archives.

Folders full of research and information about special topics in the Queens Library Archives will be available to make it easy to get started writing and editing Wikipedia articles about Queens and Wikipedians will be on site to provide basic and advanced training on editing articles and working with images.

Formal Training Presentations: 10:30-11:30am, 2:00-3:00pm (but informal hands-on help will be available all day!). You are encouraged to drop by at any time! Please join the Wikimedia NYC Meetup group.

Coalition for QueensOn June 6 2013 the Coalition For Queens hosted a Queens Borough President Candidates Tech Policy Forum at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, NYC. With its growing tech community and established spirit of entrepreneurship, Queens is positioned to become a major hub for tech innovation in New York City. The policies and agenda of the next Queens Borough President will affect the development of the tech ecosystem in the borough. The event, sponsored by AT&T and in partnership with the Museum of the Moving Image, Partnership for New York City, Code for America NY, and Queens County Young Democrats, invited candidates to discuss topics related to technology in Queens. Three candidates attended: Leroy Comrie, Melinda Katz, and Peter Vallone Jr. The discussion was moderated by Clare Trapasso of the New York Daily News and Kelly Faircloth of Betabeat.
