livestreamOn Tuesday 12 October 2021 – Friday 15 October 2021 the Internet Society will convene the 5th Indigenous Connectivity Summit online. Each year the ICS community comes together to discuss ways to ensure Alaska Native, American Indian, Inuit, Native Hawaiian, First Nations and Métis communities have affordable, high-quality and sustainable Internet access, and talk about how connectivity supports social and economic development.

The ICS 2021 will highlight Indigenous communities pursuing innovative and independent ways to connect to the Internet and their unique challenges to connectivity – further complicated by exclusion from national markets and the policy making processes that support them.

LIVESTREAMOn Monday 05 October 2020 – Friday 09 October 2020 the Internet Society convenes the 2020 Indigenous Connectivity Summit online. The 4th Indigenous Connectivity Summit brings together community network managers and operators, Indigenous-owned Internet service providers, community members, researchers, policy makers and Indigenous leaders. We discuss ways to ensure Alaska Native, American Indian, Inuit, Native Hawaiian, First Nations and Métis communities have affordable, high-quality and sustainable Internet access, and talk about how it can support social and economic development. The Summit provides practical, hands-on training to help Indigenous communities connect to the Internet to and creates opportunities to build relationships and share useful knowledge and experience.

2017 promises to be a big year for the Internet and technology, with both great promise and great challenges ahead. 2016 brought some unexpected developments in the political realm, and the consequences for the Internet are only beginning to be felt across North America and the rest of the world.

This year also marks an important milestone for the Internet Society. In 2017, we will be celebrating ISOC’s 25th anniversary of championing an open and secure Internet for everyone. We have a number of activities planned, and look forward to continuing to work with all of you as we look forward to the next 25 years.

Whatever 2017 brings, the Internet Society will continue to advocate for policies and develop our own programs which support an open, accessible and multi-stakeholder-led model of Internet governance and expand access to more individuals and communities throughout North America and worldwide. Particularly on our radar in in North America for the new year will be issues surrounding cybersecurity and the Internet of Things, access and evolving Internet policies, but we will remain responsive to new developments as they occur.

Special guest, Maria Korolov is the editor and publisher of Hypergrid Business. A journalist for more than twenty years, Maria has worked for the Chicago Tribune, Reuters, and Computerworld, reporting from over a dozen countries, including Russia and China — and now, virtual environments!
