livestreamToday Saturday October 26th 2019 at 13:00 UTC the Internet Society Livestream Channel will webcast a lightly edited version of the Internet Society UK England Chapter‘s recent Webinar ‘Gender and IoT: The Implications of smart technologies on victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence and abuse‘. In recent years, forms of online harassment and sexual abuse facilitated through information and communication technologies emerged. These ICT-supported assaults range from cyberstalking to online behavioural control. While many efforts to tackle technology-facilitated abuse (“tech abuse”) are concerned with ‘conventional’ cyber risks such as abuses on social media platforms and restrictions to devices such as laptops and phones, emerging “Internet of Things” (IoT) technologies such as ‘smart’ meters, locks, and cameras expand domestic violence victim’s risk trajectories further. Leonie Maria Tanczer presented findings of the GIoT working group at University College London’s (UCL) Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy (STEaPP).

livestreamIn October 2018 the UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) published the Code of Practice for Consumer IoT Security. In February 2019 the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) followed up with Technical Specification 103 645 – a Global IoT cybersecurity standard.

DCMS have proposed a labeling system based on adherence to the following three minimum guidelines:
1) IoT device passwords must be unique by default.
2) IoT products must provide a public point of contact as part of a vulnerability disclosure policy.
3) manufacturers must explicitly state the minimum length of time for which the device will receive security updates through an end of life policy.

In early May 2019 the DCMS launched a consultation to gather feedback. Deadline is 5 June 2019.

On 20 May 2019, as they considered their response, the Internet Society UK England Chapter hosted a webinar where Daragh Galvin, DCMS Assistant Director, Cyber Security & Data Protection, gave an overview of the scheme, and took questions.

In particular the panel will focus on consumer to business trust; how users trust online services that are offered to them. Such services include, but are not limited to, online shopping, social media, online banking and search engines. Speakers: Catherine Miller – Director of Policy at Doteveryone, who have recently published a ‘Digital Attitudes Report‘; Geoff Revill – Founder & Managing Director of Krowdthink Ltd, an SME/platform provider; Kate Green – ISOC 25 Under 25 Awardee doing research on user experience and trust in online health communities; Robin Wilton – Technical Outreach for Identity and Privacy at the Internet Society.
