BetaNYCBetaNYC is the latest incarnation of the ever-evolving NYC Open Government working group formerly known as Open NY Forum, whose original policy concepts have successfully been adopted and launched by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The group is now sponsored by, and incorporated as a local ‘brigade’ of, the Code for America organization (CfA) – a national effort partly funded by the same Kauffman Foundation that supports HackNY. CfA funds a full-time director (Noel Hidalgo) for BetaNYC, which organizes monthly #BetaTalk presentations, weekly #CivicHackNights, and occasional #GovGeek socials. CfA itself presents further opportunities – it has an accelerator program for civic startups, also awards fellowships, and funds worthy local projects. At this meetup there was comprehensive introduction to CfA and its activities, including fellow Ezra Spiers presenting on a NYC Project to improve the city’s Criminal Justice system. CfA volunteer Veronica Ludwig talked about the NYC BigApps challenge, in which #BetaNYC actively participates. Video is below.

SpaceApps NYCThe Internet Society’s New York Chapter (ISOC-NY) will be providing webcasting services to the International Space Apps Challenge’s NYC location this weekend, April 20-21 2013. The International Space Apps Challenge is a two day “codeathon” now in its second year. 83 cities around the world will participate making it officially the World’s Largest Hackathon ever! Dynamically formed teams compete to utilize publicly available space and data to design innovative “solutions” to a pre-determined series of global “challenges.” Not just NYC but many other locations will be webcasting via uStream so there will be plenty of opportunities to check out the action.

International Space Apps Challenge – this weekend #spaceapps @intlspaceapps

The International Space Apps Challenge is a two day “codeathon” happening April 21-22 2012. Dozens of locations around the world will participate, including the International Space Station and McMurdo Station, Antarctica. The NYC contingent will be located at Pivotal Labs, where ISOC-NY is assisting with the webcast. Dynamically formed teams will compete to utilize publicly available space and data to design innovative “solutions” to a pre-determined series of global “challenges.” All the locations will be webcasting via uStream so there will be plenty of opportunities to check out the action.

WhyNot is brainstorming how to create a platform that will crowdsource the next Mayor of NYC.

The Calyx Institute is challenging participants to hack a model privacy policy for Internet service providers.

Creative Rights for Creative Children (CREATE) is hacking a new IP curriculum for students that properly accounts for creative privileges like fair use.

HackNY Spring 2011 Hackathon – April 9/10 @NYU #hackny #nyc

Once again ISOC-NY will be a co-sponsor of the HackNY Hackathon event at NYU. This is a two day event – on the first day local start-ups present the latest and greatest in applied programming interfaces (API) then after a frantic coding all-nighter (pizza, doughnuts and coffee are provided) teams of students present their best efforts to crank out original applications. The 2010 Fall Hackathon drew in more than 200 students from more than 30 universities – so competition is fierce. The public is welcome to attend the judging which ISOC-NY will also webcast live.
