livestreamOn Monday and Tuesday July 20-21 2020 at 10am EDT (14:00 UTC) the Internet Society Haiti Chapter (ISOC HT) hosts two days of intensive workshops the ‘Community Networks Haiti Webinars‘. The webinars are aimed at introducing Community Networks to Government Organisations, Internet Service Providers, telecommunications companies as well as the general public in Haiti. In the sessions, Internet Society staff plus successful Community Network builders will provide an overview of what Community Networks are, how they can contribute to connecting the unconnected to the Internet, especially in rural and underserved areas, plus the benefits of their deployment including how Community Networks can enhance local economies.

Les lundi et mardi 20 et 21 juillet 2020 à 10 h 00 HAE (14 h 00 UTC), la section Internet de la société haïtienne (ISOC HT) organise deux jours d’ateliers intensifs, les «Community Networks Haiti Webinars». Les webinaires visent à présenter les réseaux communautaires aux organisations gouvernementales, aux fournisseurs de services Internet, aux entreprises de télécommunications ainsi qu’au grand public en Haïti. Au cours des sessions, le personnel de l’Internet Society ainsi que les constructeurs de réseaux communautaires à succès donneront un aperçu de ce que sont les réseaux communautaires, comment ils peuvent contribuer à connecter les personnes non connectées à Internet, en particulier dans les zones rurales et mal desservies, ainsi que les avantages de leur déploiement, y compris comment la communauté Les réseaux peuvent améliorer les économies locales.

There is widespread recognition of the opportunities and potential benefits of expanding access to the Internet, as recognized by the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets. Community networks are increasingly being proposed as a solution to connect the unconnected. This webinar will be facilitated by Miss Irene Misoi, a fellow in the Internet Society Global Volunteer Training Programme, a fellowship engagement and learning programme that focuses on developing new community leaders who can work together with Internet Society to create local awareness on the Internet Society 2020 Action Plan. She will be supported by Kennedy Ronoh and Hawi Rapudo.

Over the past few years, community networks have emerged as a low-cost, community-driven way to bring Internet connections to some of the remotest and underserved parts of the world, including in the mountainous region of Tusheti, Georgia. livestreamToday Monday 7 October 2019, at 08:00 UTC the Internet Society Livestream Channel will provide a webcast of the 2019 Asia-Pacific Regional Community Networks Summit, which was convened at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand on Thursday 29 August 2019.

Home to over 4 billion people and covering more than 50 countries and territories, Asia-Pacific is the largest and most diverse region of the globe. The region accounts for more than half of the world’s mobile subscriber base, while only 7% of people in the region have fixed broadband access. Connecting the unconnected remains a major challenge for both governments and the industry.

Over the last few years, community networks have emerged as a complementary way to connect people and to allow for low-cost, community-driven solutions to be developed to connect people in underserved locations. However, these community-led solutions face a number of challenges that require policymakers and regulators consideration so that they may flourish.

Jointly organized by ESCAP (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific) and the Internet Society, this multistakeholder dialogue covered technology, best practices, regulations and socioeconomic issues; highlighted community network projects in the region as best practice; and included policy options for infrastructure sharing, spectrum allocation, and universal service funds.
