On Tuesday May 22 2018, the IGF-USA on the Road caravan arrives in NYC at URBAN COMMUNITY NETWORKS – PRACTICE & POLICY – an afternoon get-together hosted by the Internet Society New York Chapter (ISOC-NY) and the Federal Communications Bar Association (FCBA) at Brooklyn Law School. This half-day conference is intended to serve as a summit for those involved in building community networks in NYC, and an opportunity to formulate the appropriate policy advocacy positions to advance this work. On Wednesday, May 28, 2014 the Open Technology Institute (OTI) presented a panel – Localism Over Consolidation: An Exploration of Public Broadband Options – in Washington DC, a discussion of various approaches to local investment in broadband. The panel featured a diverse set of experts on public broadband networks and projects, including the manager of a municipal fiber network in Wilson, NC. Panelists discussed different approaches communities have taken so far and share thoughts on what steps other local governments can take going forward to support access to affordable and high-speed broadband. FCCOn Wednesday March 27 2013 the FCC’s Wireline Competition Bureau will hold the first of a series of Gigabit Community Broadband Workshops. This follows Chairman Genachowski’s Gigabit City Challenge proposal on January 18. The goal of this workshop is to explore how current gigabit communities deployed their networks, the economic and social benefits that accrue to gigabit communities, ways communities can aggregate demand in order to make a gigabit network deployment more economically appealing, and how communities can leverage their assets to incent an ultra-fast network. The workshop will be free and open to the public and will be webcast live via fcc.gov.

Kushnick’s Law states:”A regulated company will always renege on promises to provide public benefits tomorrow in exchange for regulatory and financial benefits today.” In this interview he explains how AT&T’s recently announced plan to spend $14 billion to upgrade its network in exchange for a rescinding of regulation should be approached with skepticism, and how citizens and communities might respond to protect their interests.

On February 18 2012 the Internet Society’s New York Chapter (ISOC-NY) participated in the first ever FreedomBox Hackfest, held at the Columbia School of Law in New York City. The FreedomBox is an initiative “to create a network of personal servers to protect privacy during daily life, maintain beachheads of free network access during times of political instability, and open lines of communication during natural disasters.” The project is a direct consequence of the “Freedom in the Cloud” talk that Eben Moglen gave two years, almost to the day, earlier for ISOC-NY.

One foundational issue is the question of how the FreedomBoxes will identify themselves, discover their peers, and know which ones to trust. In our our first video we see a pair of presentations, one by Nic Daley, another by Isaac Wilder, that explore the problem.

A contingent from the The Free Network Foundation was present at the hackfest and, indeed, a prototype of their “Freedom Tower” was in operation to provide participants with connectivity. FNF based local wireless networks, combined with FreedomBox distribution, can be the foundation of powerful community-based autonomous systems. David Solomonoff talked to Isaac Wilder and Marcus Eagan to find out more about the organization, and their forthcoming pilot project in Detroit.
