Advocating for classification of broadband providers as a Title II common carrier were Michael Weinberg of Public Knowledge and Evan Engstrom of Engine Advocacy. On August 24 2014, Dave Moskowitz of InternetNZ – an Internet Society organizational member – spoke at TEDxWellington. His topic was ‘The Four Superpowers of the Internet‘. Dave defines these superpowers as the core Internet values: End-to-End, Open Standards, Universal Access, and Freedom of Expression, or, more briefly, DIRECT – OPEN – ACCESSIBLE – FREE. To use these powers justly he invokes TED prize winner Karen Armstrong’s Charter for Compassion, which calls upon each of us to live the “golden rule”, and treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. –Finally, two other issues: the City of New York is applying for the .nyc generic top-level domain (TLD) with ICANN. The company selected is Neustar. I testified on the topic on March 23, 2012 at DoITT but there will be more hearings on the issue. And, the City of New York will soon hold hearings on pay phones on our streets. A company or companies will be selected to replace Verizon as the operator of all most payphones. DoITT will schedule hearings on this topic as well. What do you think?
