On January 16 2013 Susan Crawford, author of “Captive Audience: The Telecom Industry and Monopoly Power in the New Gilded Age” presented the theme of the book at Cardozo School of Law in NYC. The presentation was followed by a Q&A. Many ISOC-NY members attended and contributed to the discussion. Video is below. Remembering Aaron / Internet Freedom Day / Anniversary of SOPA/PIPA blackout

In a recent Wired article The Internet Deserves Its Own Holiday, writer Marvin Ammori suggested that January 18, the anniversary of the SOPA/PIPA blackout, be celebrated as Internet Freedom Day. The suggestion was well received and many event will take place this Friday, including this one in NYC. The unfortunate death of Aaron Swartz has both highlighted the issue and made the the day an opportunity for a wake. ISOC-NY will join other NYC groups on Friday to participate. Details below.

On Thursday October 11 2012 the New York Technology Council and ISOC-NY hosted author Andrew Blum discussing his book Tubes: A Journey to the Center of the Internet. Andrew’s book, prompted when his Internet was disconnected by a squirrel, accessibly examines the raw physical infrastructure of the network, and the people who put and hold it together. Video is below.

One point he made in the talk was that the only people that wouldn’t give him access to their inner workings were Google. Within days after the talk Google announced a new datacenter info website including a street-view walk-through their Lenoir NC data-center.

NYC World IPv6 Launch event – Jun 6 @ NYU #ipv6 #v6launch

Organized by the Internet Society, World IPv6 Launch on 6 June 2012 is the designated date when organizations across the industry – including Internet service providers (ISPs), hardware makers, and web companies – prepare for and permanently enable Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) on their products and services as Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) address space runs out.

Last year, major web companies and other industry participants successfully enabled and tested IPv6 on their main websites for 24 hours on World IPv6 Day, which was held on 8 June 2011. World IPv6 Day only involved websites, and was just a day, this year in contrast the emphasis is across the entire spectrum of the Internet industry and is permanent.

Similar to last year’s successful NYC event, on Wednesday June 6 2012 ISOC-NY will present an informal discussion and celebration meetup at NYU starting at 7pm EDT. Among those attending will be Phillip Koblence, VP Operations (NYI), and Sagi Brody of Webair who will both give brief talks on their company’s IPv6 implementation efforts, after which we will repair to a nearby drinking establishment for social activities.

On February 22, 2012 the New York Technology Council will host a panel, “Mobile Technology and Social Change” which will explore how mobile technology is being used as a tool for social change and justice. Speakers include Dani Diaz, Developer Evangelist, Microsoft; J.D. Hollis, Founder, near/far studio; and Hillary Hartley, Director of Integrated Marketing, NIC.

As you may see, non-members will be charged $20 to attend this event, however we have arranged for 15 free seats for ISOC-NY members, first come first served. RSVP via our meetup event to get one. There will be refreshments.

On Wednesday January 25 2012 the New York Technology Council will host author David Weinberger to discuss aspects of his new book, “Too Big to Know: Rethinking Knowledge Now That the Facts Aren’t the Facts, Experts Are Everywhere, and the Smartest Person in the Room Is the Room.” David is co-author of the best-seller The Cluetrain Manifesto, which Information Week called the most important business book since Tom Peter’s In Search of Excellence. He is also the author of the critically-acclaimed Small Pieces Loosely Joined: A Unified Theory of the Web and Everything Is Miscellaneous: The Power of the New Digital Disorder.

David is currently a senior researcher at Harvard Law’s Berkman Center for the Internet & Society, Co-Director of the Harvard Library Innovation Lab at Harvard Law School, and is a Franklin Fellow at the United States State Department. He is a board member of OneWebDay.
