livestream Today, Thursday March 7 2019, at 3pm EST (20:00 UTC) the Internet Society and Pew Research Center will host an event to launch groundbreaking research from Pew on how mobile technology is shaping communities and the Internet around the world. Mobile Internet usage is quickly becoming a primary means of access in many developing countries. The Social-Mobile Leap will explore the results of Pew Research Center’s upcoming study, Mobile Connectivity in Emerging Economies, on mobile phone usage and its social impact in 11 countries worldwide. The participating countries include Colombia, India, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico, Philippines, South Africa, Tunisia, Venezuela and Vietnam. The event will also feature a panel entitled Defining Internet access: How mobile trends are shaping online experiences in developing countries. Leading industry experts including Mozilla Policy Advisor Alice Munyua and Next Century Cities’ Executive Director Deb Socia will discuss how the findings can help inform sound policy on Internet access solutions for the rest of the world to get online.

MobileWeek 2014 was a 6-day conference, hackathon, and event series that happened April 12-17 in NYC. The culminating event was a panel – Mobile Life – hosted by Silicon Harlem at MIST on 116th St. that focused on how entertainment can be a mobile rainmaker, and future prospects as wearables and the Internet of Things become manifest. Speakers were Rodney Williams of LISNR, Tiffany Hardin of Gild Creative Group, and Hot97 DJ Funkmaster Flex who runs the successful In Flex We Trust website. Moderators were Silicon Harlem co-founders Clayton Banks and Bruce Lincoln. Special guest speaker was Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer. Video is below.

Towerstream announces Manhattan WiFi network #nyc #broadband #WiFi

According to Bloomberg WiMax ISP Towerstream has announced a scheme to install a network of about 1,000 outdoor wireless routers in Manhattan, and sell ‘hand off’ access to the system to wireless carriers to cover service gaps. The article states:

During a demonstration recently on the corner of West Broadway and Broome Street in New York’s SoHo district, an iPhone’s data speed leapt from .35 megabits per second to 26 Mbps.

Noting that the routers will cost $800 and Towerstream will pay up to $1k/month to rent locations the article details an earlier test of 200 routers:

Without any promotion, the network handled 20 million Web sessions by consumers who happened to spot Towerstream when trolling for a Wi-Fi connection. That’s a fifth of the Wi-Fi traffic generated by AT&T during the same three months at its hotspots, which include most Starbucks and McDonald’s.

NY Times: tiered mobile broadband pricing on the way..

A New York Times article ‘Getting What You Pay for on the Mobile Internet‘ today suggests that the days of ‘one size fits all’ mobile broadband rates will soon be over. As companies introduce Long Term Evolution (L.T.E.) their costs will rise rapidly, and the only answer will be to raise prices – at least for heavy users.

The last word goes to bandwidth management software purveyor Pat McCarthy who says, in an echo of Whitacre’s famous comments, “The problem with mobile broadband so far has been most of the revenue it has generated has gone to over-the-top Internet content services, not to the operators, that’s what they are trying to change.”
