Today, Saturday March 30 2019 a number of partners including Brooklyn Law School Legal Hackers present the main sessions of the NYC node of the 2019 Computational Law & Blockchain Festival – a global event series bringing together coders, designers, lawyers, policymakers, researchers, and students to co-create the future of law, legal practice, and policy. In the spirit of decentralization, the Festival is hosted at independent, self-organized nodes in cities around the world during the month of March. On February 9 2015 the NY Legal Hackers Meetup presented 3D Printing in a 2D Legal Landscape at The Yard in NYC. A panel examined the issues from three perspectives: 1) the current legal landscape and how it may impact consumer 3D printing, such as IP, product liability, food and drug, and controlled substance/items laws; 2) current efforts at making 3D printing a legitimate fixture in the consumer realm; and 3) minor and bold solutions to avoid a fractured legal framework for consumer 3D printing, ranging from IP and tort overhaul to mandatory licensing schemes. On November 19 2014 Legal Hackers NYC and Launch LM presented ‘Legal Issues in the Sharing Economy‘ at Joynture NYC. The proliferation of companies rooted in the sharing economy — a socio-economic system built around the sharing of human and physical resources — has been making headlines as Airbnb, Uber, Lyft, and other startups quickly amass users while grappling with laws hostile to their missions. While there is no doubt that sharing economy principles often challenge local regulatory schemes related to health, safety, labor, and taxes, they can also create entrepreneurial opportunities while promoting social good. This panel explores the pros and cons of the sharing economy and the reactions of local governments to these companies’ attempts to either flout, circumvent, or challenge local laws. On Friday April 4 2014 will present a symposium From Bleak House to Geek House: Evolving Law for Entrepreneurial Lawyers at Brooklyn Law School. Participants will focus on challenges and opportunities that are changing legal education and the practice of law. Last weekend February 8/9 2014 the New York Legal Hackers participated in an International Data Privacy Hackathon, along with colleagues in San Francisco and London. The New York location – the Made in NY Center in Dumbo, was webcast live by ISOC-NY via the Legal Hackers own YouTube channel.
The New York event kicked off with a spectacular panel of experts. Speaking were Jonathan Askin, Brooklyn Law School; Dona Fraser, ESRB; David Wainberg, AppNexus; Doc Searls; Amyt Eckstein, Moses & Singer; and K. Waterman, MIT Fellow.

At lunch on Saturday, there were two further keynote speakers: Susan Herman, Chair, ACLU, and Hon. Ann Aiken, Judge, District of Oregon. Judge Aiken challenged the hackers to come up with an app to aid released prisoners in successful reentry into society.
Around 6:30pm Sunday, after a brief talk by Michael Joseph Holland, Center for Urban Science & Progress (CUSP) at NYU, and Dazza Greenwoood, MIT Media Lab, about a forthcoming anthology Privacy, Big Data, and the Public Good, the judging got underway. Projects presented were Using Copyright to Remove Revenge Pornography Selfies; Terms of Service Helper; Playing with Tor; Cookie Jar; Re-Entry (as suggested by Judge Aiken); and Ghostdrop.
Finally the judging. The winner, Ghostdrop, took away a $1000 cash prize Runner up: Re-Entry got a silver GitHub account. Third place – Terms of Service Helper – got a 3D printed “giant-fracking” lock from Makerbot.
On Wednesday January 8, 2014 DC Legal Hackers hosted #LegalHack Broadband Infrastructure, a meetup to discuss the efforts of city, state, and federal governments to create and maintain maps of broadband infrastructure to improve awareness, choice, and competition in the broadband market. Speakers included Virginia Maloney, Senior Project Manager, New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC); Anne Neville, Director, State Broadband Initiative, National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA); Mike Byrne, Geographic Information Officer, Federal Communications Commission (FCC); Greta Byrum, Senior Field Analyst, Open Technology Institute (OTI). Moderator was Julia Pulidindi, Senior Associate, The National League of Cities. The event was webcast live by the Internet Society North America Bureau, video is below.

On Jan 2 2014 the Legal Hackers NYC meetup hosted a forum Revenge Porn – Hacking Legal Solutions at the Made in NY Media Center in Brooklyn. The issue is specifically the victimization of women via the dissemination of sexually explicit pictures, pictures they never expected the world to see. This disturbing, but not necessarily illegal, phenomenon has been labeled Revenge Porn and is at the crux of the ever-growing tension between free expression and privacy on the Internet. A distinguished panel explored possible solutions to this growing problem (legal, regulatory, technological, and market-based), as well as the challenges in ensuring these solutions are both effective and constitutionally sound. Speakers were: Derek Bambauer – Professor of Law, University of Arizona; Lee Rowland – Staff Attorney, ACLU; Mark Jaffe – Partner, Tor Ekeland, P.C.; Ari Ezra Waldman – Associate Director, Institute for Information Law & Policy, New York Law School; and Jeremy Glickman – Deputy Chief of the Cybercrime and Identity Theft Bureau, New York County.
