Friday 13 November 2015 and Saturday 14 November 2015 the Platform Cooperativism Conference will be held at The New School in NYC, described as

a coming-out party for the cooperative Internet, built of platforms owned and governed by the people who rely on them. The program will include discussion sessions, screenings, monologues, legal hacks, workshops, and dialogues, as well as a showcase of projects, both conceptual and actual, under the purview of celebrity judges. VIDEO: @CityAndStateNY State of Our City panel on NYC #sharingeconomy w/ @airbnb , @NYHTC, @GaleMBP, @BrooklynChamber

State of Our CityOn Tuesday, February 17th 2015, City & State hosted its 5th Annual State of Our City forum, convening New York City’s leaders in government, business, and advocacy to discuss some of the most important issues the City will face in 2015. The first panel considered the disruptive advent of the sharing economy, and included representatives of both AirBnB and also the Hotel Trades Council, and also a commissioner from the Taxi and Limousine Commission, however nobody from either Uber or Lyft. The panel was joined by Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, and concluded with Carlo Scissura, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce remarking that consumer demand for improved services was such that incumbents, upstarts, and regulators were obligated to resolve their differences and arrive at working arrangements. The panel, which runs 45 mins, was webcast live via Livestream, video is below.

VIDEO: @legalhackNYC – Legal Issues in the #SharingEconomy #legalhack

On November 19 2014 Legal Hackers NYC and Launch LM presented ‘Legal Issues in the Sharing Economy‘ at Joynture NYC. The proliferation of companies rooted in the sharing economy — a socio-economic system built around the sharing of human and physical resources — has been making headlines as Airbnb, Uber, Lyft, and other startups quickly amass users while grappling with laws hostile to their missions. While there is no doubt that sharing economy principles often challenge local regulatory schemes related to health, safety, labor, and taxes, they can also create entrepreneurial opportunities while promoting social good. This panel explores the pros and cons of the sharing economy and the reactions of local governments to these companies’ attempts to either flout, circumvent, or challenge local laws. PANEL: Diana Dellamere, Public Policy Manager, Lyft; Henry Imber, General Manager, onefinestay; Amyt Eckstein, Counsel, Moses & Singer. MODERATOR: Jonathan Askin, Professor, Brooklyn Law School.
