On September 9, 2025, Equality Now and Sourcebooks hosted a hybrid book event ‘The New Age of Sexism: AI, Gender, and the Urgency of Legal Reform‘ at Scandinavia House in NYC. As artificial intelligence reshapes our world, women, girls and marginalized communities face unprecedented threats. From AI-driven discrimination to deepfake sexual abuse, emerging technologies are weaponizing gender-based violence on a global scale. Laura Bates explores this worrying trend in her latest book The New Age of Sexism.This session brought together experts in digital rights, AI and gender to explore the themes of the book and discuss solutions and legal reform to ensure a more equitable digital future.

Today, Thursday December 26 2019, at 7pm EST (00:00 UTC,n the first installment of the Internet Society Livestreaming‘s ‘12 Days of Streams‘ annual highlights, we feature ‘The role of socio-cultural factors in closing the digital gender gap‘ – a session at UN HQ in NYC on 13 December 2019.

The latest statistics show that the proportion of women using the Internet globally is 48 per cent, compared to 58 per cent of men. In relative terms, this means that the global Internet user gap is 17 per cent. In developing countries, the digital gender divide is wider and growing faster, partly due to sociocultural issues such as gender stereotypes, and family and community views on access to, and use of, technology by women and girls. This meeting, under the umbrella of the EQUALS Global Partnership, brought together proponents of a number of remedial initiatives.

Today Saturday October 26th 2019 at 13:00 UTC the Internet Society Livestream Channel will webcast a lightly edited version of the Internet Society UK England Chapter‘s recent Webinar ‘Gender and IoT: The Implications of smart technologies on victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence and abuse‘. In recent years, forms of online harassment and sexual abuse facilitated through information and communication technologies emerged. These ICT-supported assaults range from cyberstalking to online behavioural control. While many efforts to tackle technology-facilitated abuse (“tech abuse”) are concerned with ‘conventional’ cyber risks such as abuses on social media platforms and restrictions to devices such as laptops and phones, emerging “Internet of Things” (IoT) technologies such as ‘smart’ meters, locks, and cameras expand domestic violence victim’s risk trajectories further. Leonie Maria Tanczer presented findings of the GIoT working group at University College London’s (UCL) Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy (STEaPP).
