livestreamToday, Sunday December 30 2018, at 7pm EST (00:00 UTC), for the fifth installment of the Internet Society Livestreaming‘s  ‘12  Days of Streams‘ annual highlights we turn to another Internet Hall of Famer, Google’s Chief Internet Evangelist Vint Cerf. Early in 2018 Vint collaborated with the Internet Society New York Chapter for two forums on Digital Preservation – the first in DC focused on policy, the second in NYC focused on incentives. With guest experts Kate Zwaard, chief of National Digital Initiatives at the Library of Congress, Michelle M. Wu, Associate Dean for Library Services at Georgetown University Law Center, Robert Cartolano, AVP for Technology and Preservation, Columbia University Libraries, and Brad Burnham, Managing Partner, Union Square Ventures, these well attended events fostered lively discussions and an (ironically unpreserved) dedicated website.

WEBCAST TODAY: Governing the Internet of Things @isocdc @InternetGov @doctorow #iot #iotgov

livestreamToday, Friday March 30 2018, the Internet Society Washington DC Chapter (ISOC DC) and the Internet Governance Lab will host a mini-conference Governing the Internet of Things at the American University in Washington DC. The Internet’s architecture and governance structures have been designed to enable innovation, global communication and the free flow of information, but the Internet of Things presents a new range of governance challenges. An Internet embedded in the material world creates new and increased concerns around privacy, security, and the possibility of physical harm to people and disruption of material infrastructure. To what extent do the Internet’s underlying architectural and governance principles need to evolve to address these risks? What is the outlook for security and privacy in the context of ubiquitous cyber-physical systems that range from cars to medical devices to home control systems? What forms of inequality and discrimination are emerging in this environment? This panel brings together stakeholders from industry, design communities, civil society and academia to address the transformation of Internet governance in the age of cyber-physical systems. Speakers: Cory Doctorow, Author; Paul Ohm, Professor Georgetown Law; Alexandra Deschamps-Sonsino, Open Internet of Things Certification Mark; Gilad Rosner, Internet of Things Privacy Forum; Tatevik Sargsyan, Ranking Digital Rights Project, New America Foundation; Adam Thierer, George Mason University; Derrick Cogburn, American University; Laura DeNardis, American University; Andrew Rens, American University.

WEBCAST TODAY: Will the Internet Fragment? A Discussion with Milton Mueller @OTI @ISOCDC @miltonmueller #netfrag

livestreamToday Tuesday June 6 2017, at noon EDT New America’s Open Technology Institute and the Internet Society Washington DC Chapter present Will the Internet Fragment? a panel featuring Professor Milton Mueller. author, of Will the Internet Fragment?: Sovereignty, Globalization and Cyberspace. In the book, Will the Internet Fragment?, Professor Mueller argues that the fragmentation diagnosis misses the mark, and the rhetoric of fragmentation camouflages the real issue: the attempt by governments to align information flows with their jurisdictional boundaries. The fragmentation debate is really a power struggle over the future of national sovereignty, pitting global governance and open access against traditional territorial institutions of government. This conflict, the book argues, can only be resolved through radical institutional innovations. In order to save the internet, we need to move away from national sovereignty and towards popular sovereignty in cyberspace. PANEL: Dr. Milton Mueller, Professor, Georgia Institute of Technology School of Public Policy; Rebecca MacKinnon, Director, Ranking Digital Rights project at New America; Tim Maurer, Co-director of the Cyber Policy Initiative, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; Angela McKay, Senior Director of Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy, Microsoft. MODERATOR: Derrick Cogburn, Professor, American University. The event will be webcast live on the New Anerica YouTube Channel, and the Internet Society Livestream Channel.
