On July 24 July 2020 the Internet Society, a global non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the open development, evolution, and use of the Internet, and AFRINIC, the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) for the African region, announced the launch of a new collaborative effort, Africa Internet Measurements. This collaborative effort, a key component of the Internet Society’s Measuring the Internet project, builds upon a strategic, long-term partnership agreement held between both organizations aimed at strengthening continent-wide collaboration to drive the development of the Internet in Africa through projects and research related to Internet measurements, Internet resilience, routing security, open Internet standards, and Internet Exchange Points (IXPs).

On 3-5 March 2020 the Internet Society, together with its partners, hosts the Ethiopia Internet Development Conference 2020 (EIDC) in Addis Ababa. Recently, the former Ethiopian state monopoly on telecommunication has been abolished. The EIDC is a multi-stakeholder event enabling the local community to prepare and create the foundation for a robust Internet ecosystem in this new post-monopoly era.

The 10th African Peering and Interconnection Forum (AfPIF) will be held over a 3-day period from 20-22 August 2019 in Balaclava, Mauritius. AfPIF is an annual event that serves as a platform to develop the African Internet. It brings key infrastructure, service, and content providers together in order to improve network interconnection, lower the cost of connectivity, and increase the number of users in the region. First held in 2010, the event was created to address the realization that most of Africa’s Internet traffic is sourced or exchanged outside the continent. Organized by the Internet Society and African IXP Association (AFIX) in collaboration with the local host, Rogers Capital. The event will be webcast live in both English and French on the Internet Society Livestream Channel, with support from Afrinic.

As a multi-stakeholder forum, AfPIF seeks to foster cross-border interconnection opportunities by ensuring that key players — infrastructure providers, Internet service providers (ISPs), IXPs, international financial institutions, and policy-makers and regulators are present at the event.
