The 2018 theme is “Commercial Space Stations: Building an Ecosystem in Space.” This year’s DPSS will provide a forum for topics relevant to future space station planning and will open the doors for the commercial space sector, researchers, technology developers, transportation and habitation providers, government agencies, policymakers, and other interested parties to partake in building an ecosystem in space. ipnsigToday Monday May 18 2015 the Internet Society’s InterPlanetary Networking Special Interest Group (IPNSIG) will hold its 2nd Annual InterPlanetary Networking Conference in Washington DC. The conference has the theme Showcasing Delay & Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN): the Emerging Standard for Space Data Communications. Last year’s conference (video) —Space Technology Innovations: Enabling Exploration Above, Improving Life Below—presented how DTN can enable space data communications as well as provide network services in constrained terrestrial network environments. This year the focus is upon DTN in the space arena. Speakers include Vint Cerf, Brett Willman & Suzanne Davidson – the NASA/Boeing team working on DTN aboard the International Space Station, David Israel & Donald Cornwell the NASA team who concluded the very successful Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration in late 2013 and who are planning the 2017 Laser Relay Communication Demonstration, Scott Burleigh, JPL’s chief DTN architect, Keith Scott who leads the Consultative Consortium for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) DTN working group that is standardizing DTN protocols, Fred Templin of Boeing who will demonstrate a potentially important new security enhancement to DTN, and Scott Pace, the Director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University. The conference will be webcast live on the Internet Society Livestream Channel.

IPN EventOn Friday January 24 2014 the Internet Society’s InterPlanetary Networking Special Interest Group (IPNSIG) hosted a one-day conference entitled “Space Technology Innovation: Enabling Exploration Above—Improving Life Below” at Google HQ in Mountain View CA. Speakers included: Vint Cerf—VP & Internet Evangelist at Google — on the history and future of interplanetary networking; David Brin—Physicist, futurist and major science fiction writer—on the paths that space technology innovations might take in the next 10 – 100 years.; Maria Uden — Lulea Technical University, Sweden — on the application of Delay & Disruption Tolerant Networking technologies (which were originally developed to enable interplanetary data communications) to solve connectivity problems for remote and disconnected communities near the arctic circle; Michael Cassidy—Director of Google X Lab’s “Project Loon — on Project Loon: GoogleX Lab’s project to bring internet to the world via high altitude balloons;  Scott Burleigh — Chief architect for Delay & Disruption Tolerant Networking—on the Ring Road Architecture (a proposal to provide basic network services to any geographical region through a constellation of nanosatellites using Delay & Disruption Tolerant Networking); David Israel & Dr. Don Cornwell — with NASA’s Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) – on the recent demonstration of DTN over laser communication links to the Moon; Fred Mednick — founder of Teachers without Borders (TWB) — on TWB’s work to improve teaching skills and outcomes for students around the globe—and opportunities to use Delay & Disruption Tolerant Networking to deliver TWB content to teachers and students in remote areas; Chris Carberry—Executive Director of Explore Mars, Inc. — on: when will humans step foot on Mars?;  and Boeing/NASA’s team managing DTN deployments on the International Space Station—on recent and planned uses of DTN on ISS.
