On Tuesday April 16 2024 at 5:00pm-6:30pm EDT (21:00-22:30 UTC) American University’s Tech, Law & Security Program, Internet Governance Lab, and Inclusive Tech Policy Initiative host a panel discussion ‘Universal Acceptance – What it is and how it relates to digital inclusivity?’.

Have you ever tried signing up for a website or serve, only to get frustrated because it won’t accept your email or continues to give you an error message? Maybe it has too many character or has symbols that aren’t accepted? Universal Acceptance seeks to solve this problem so that no matter the language. characters, or script, every email address and domain name are accepted without discrimination. An expert panel will discuss this little-known issue that fundamentally impacts the ability for many people to engage online in an authentic and user-friendly manner.

A live simulcast will be provide by the Internet Society US Washington DC Chapter (ISOC-DC).

isoc liveOn Saturday-Sunday June 10-11 2023 AU Inclusive Technology Policy (ITP), AU Internet Governance Lab (IGL), Technology, Law, and Security Program (TLS), and the AU Institute on Disability and Public Policy (IDPP) will host the 2023 North American School of Internet Governance (NASIG) at American University in Washington DC. NASIG is a capacity-building event that aims to teach the principles, norms, rules, policies, and organizations that shape the internet. Internet governance refers to the development and application of shared principles that guide the evolution and use of the internet and the decision-making processes and organizations involved in shaping it. NASIG also seeks to empower the next generation of internet leaders.

The theme for NASIG 2023 is inclusion and accessibility, an important and timely topic in internet governance. Inclusion and accessibility ensure that all individuals have equal opportunities to participate and benefit from the internet regardless of their background or circumstances. This includes universal access, digital literacy, and the inclusion of marginalized and disadvantaged communities.

livestreamOn Wednesday September 2 2020, at 10:00 EDT (14:00 UTC), the Internet Society Washington DC Chapter, the Internet Governance Lab, and the American University School of Communication present ‘Beyond Cambridge Analytica: Microtargeting and Online Campaigns in 2020‘.

Use of data and microtargeting in political advertising were famously critiqued after in the 2016 US elections, and in relation to other recent influence campaigns around the world. Though the principal firm known for these campaigns, Cambridge Analytica, shuttered in 2018, these techniques are still widely employed, and several former CA employees are now involved with new data analytics and campaign firms including Data Propria, which has been linked to the 2020 election.

For this event, two of the foremost researchers into online political communications discuss evolving campaign strategy and methods, clarify lingering myths and misunderstandings and reflect on the significance, impact and lessons for campaign communications in the 2020 US presidential election and beyond.
